College and university sports recap: November 1, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was an eventful weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks hosted the 2022 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Soccer Championships Friday, October 28, 2022 to Sunday, October 30.

The tournament was held at Comet Stadium in Raymond. The Kodiaks women’s soccer team earned a bronze medal, with a 2-0 win over the NAIT Ooks on Sunday, October 30.

The men’s soccer team was eliminated in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 28 after a 2-0 loss to The King’s University Eagles.

The Kodiaks soccer teams were not the only teams participating in championship events.

The cross country team was on the road for the 2022 ACAC Cross Country Running Championships. The event took place on Saturday, October 29 and was hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton.

On the women’s side, Maria Boix-Frias of the Kodiaks placed 14th in the six-kilometre event. Her teammate Rosie Bouchard placed 20th, while Hannah Smith finished in the 29th spot, and Rayanne Hoeflicher placed 36th. Makenna Fitzgerald of the SAIT Trojans came in first place, her second-straight championship.

On the men’s side, Concordia’s Leonard Chesoo came in first. Cooper Williams was the top-placed member of the Kodiaks, finishing in seventh place. His teammate Cole Herbert finished 12th, while Justin Fisher finished in 18th place. Kodiaks Jack Bentley and Chase Chambers finished back-to-back, in 23rd and 24th place respectively, and Kurt Caballo came in 49th.

Both the Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams competed against Briercrest College.

On Friday, October 28, the men’s basketball team beat Briercrest 103-69. Brady Baines led the way for Lethbridge College with 22 points. On Saturday, October 29, the Kodiaks won 92-67. Paycen Blackmore had 19 points to lead Lethbridge College in scoring. The team faces Northwestern Polytechnic on Friday, November 4. The Kodiaks are undefeated on the regular season, with four wins and no losses.

Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team has a record of three wins and one loss, after splitting their games with Briercrest College over the weekend. On Friday, October 28, Lethbridge College lost a close one, 48-46. Kitawna Sparks led the Kodiaks with 17 points. On Saturday, October 29, the Kodiaks redeemed themselves with a 71-56 victory over Briercrest. Tylee Leavitt led Lethbridge with 22 points. The Kodiaks will face Northwestern Polytechnic on Friday, November 4.

Both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams had the weekend off and will both face Northwestern Polytechnic on Friday, November 4.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The University of Lethbridge (U of L) men’s basketball team took a trip to Montana this weekend to close out their exhibition game schedule. On Friday, October 28, the Pronghorns lost 87-50 against Carroll College. Kymani Pollard led the U of L with 10 points. On Saturday, October 29, the U of L lost 85-54 against Montana State University – Northern in Havre, Montana. Kymani Pollard and Shae Gibb each scored 14 points for the Pronghorns. The Pronghorns start their Canada West regular season on Friday, November 4 in Lethbridge against the University of Victoria.

The women’s basketball team did not play this weekend, and will start their regular season on Friday, November 4 on home court against the University of Victoria.

The U of L swimming team competed at the Dino Cup, hosted by the University of Calgary on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29. Ryenne Katterhagen of the women’s side and Apollo Hess on the men’s side impressed and were recognized for their efforts in the pool.

The two were named the Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

First-year student-athlete Ryenne Katterhagen swam to fourth place in each of the 50, 100, and 200-metre breaststroke events. She totalled six points at the Dino Cup.

Apollo Hess won every single event he registered in at the Dino Cup, including the 50, 100, and 200-metre breaststroke. Hess also won the 100-metre IM. In relay, Hess and his teammates won both the 200-metre medley and the 200-metre freestyle events. Hess collected 24 points at the event.

In other results from Calgary, Chris Alexander earned wins in the 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke events. He also placed second in the 100-metre backstroke and collected 18 points at the meet. Parker Brown placed third in the 100-metre freestyle and fourth in the 50-metre freestyle.

Yaseen Daoud placed fourth in the 200-metre backstroke. Hunter Stewardson finished third in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Pronghorn swimmers will travel to Vancouver for the Colleges Cup next weekend. The event is hosted by the University of British Columbia on Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6.
