Blizzard conditions reduce speeds and visibility on Lethbridge streets

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) is warning motorists to reduce speeds and use caution on city streets as blizzard-like conditions move into Lethbridge on Saturday, November 5, 2022.

The speed limit is reduced to 60 km/hr on Whoop-Up Drive and visibility is poor on roadways throughout the city.

In early afternoon, LPS said few collisions have been reported, but drivers should expect winter driving conditions for the next few days and adjust their driving for the conditions.

The LPS says the fact that rain fell before the snow started will create ice underneath the snow, which could create treacherous driving conditions.

Environment Canada is forecasting snow for the rest of the day, with accumulations up to 4 centimetres, and temperatures falling to -5 with a wind chill of -12 degrees. The wind is gusting up to 60 km/hr on Saturday, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The wind is expected to reduce overnight, with lighter winds in the forecast for Sunday. Environment Canada says the snow should ease around midnight, but periods of snow are still expected through Sunday and Monday, November 7, 2022.
