College and university sports recap: November 7, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a successful weekend for teams with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s volleyball team improved their record to five wins and no losses on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season. On Friday, November 4, 2022, the Kodiaks picked up a 3-0 win on the road against Northwestern Polytechnic in Grande Prairie, Alberta. That victory was followed by another 3-0 win on Saturday, November 5, against NAIT. The Kodiaks return home to face The King’s University on Friday, November 11.

The women’s volleyball team also went undefeated this weekend. They beat Northwestern Polytechnic in Grande Prairie 3-0 on Friday, November 4. On Saturday, November 5, the Kodiaks beat NAIT 3-2 to improve their season record to four wins and one loss. The team will host The King’s University on Friday, November 11.

The men’s basketball team hosted Northwestern Polytechnic on Friday, November 4. Paycen Blackmore scored 24 points to lead the Kodiaks to a 97-71 victory. Lethbridge College hosted NAIT on Saturday, November 5. It was a close game, but the Kodiaks came away with a 72-69 win. Filip Karanovic led Lethbridge College with 16 points. The Kodiaks visit The King’s University in Edmonton on Friday, November 18. The men’s team is undefeated this season, with six wins and no losses.

The women’s basketball team boasts a record of five wins and one loss and picked up two wins this weekend. The Kodiaks were on home court Friday, November 4. They beat Northwestern Polytechnic 70-33. Courtney Deemter had 16 points, while Madison Barfuss added 16 off the bench for the Kodiaks. On Saturday, November 5, Lethbridge College hosted NAIT and secured a 63-46 win. Kitawna Sparks led the way for the home team with 21 points. The Kodiaks are in Edmonton against The King’s University on Friday, November 18.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

It was a bit of a lighter weekend for the U of L Pronghorns. The men’s and women’s basketball teams began their Canada West regular seasons by both hosting the University of Victoria.

The men’s basketball team had a tight game against the Vikes on Friday, November 4, but the U of L came away with the 98-94 victory. Kymani Pollard scored 29 points for the Pronghorns, while Shae Gibb added 24. In a rematch on Saturday, November 5, the University of Victoria secured an 88-60 win. Diego Maffia scored 31 points for the Vikes, while the Pronghorns were led by Jeff Rodehutskors, who scored 14 points. The U of L will be in Langley this coming weekend, for back-to-back games against Trinity Western University on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12.

The women’s basketball team earned a 72-71 win over the Vikes on Friday, November 4 to open their regular season. Jessica Haenni scored 22 points to lead the Pronghorns. On Saturday, November 5, the U of L lost 71-69. Ashlyn Day scored 34 points for the University of Victoria, while the Pronghorns were once again led by Jessica Haenni, who scored 24 points. The women’s team will be in Langley for games against Trinity Western University on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12.

In the pool, the U of L swim team competed at the 2022 Odlum Brown Colleges Cup.

The event was hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver on Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6. The UBC Thunderbirds swept the overall meet, which showcased 250 top swimmers from across Western Canada.

Apollo Hess of the U of L Pronghorns swept the men’s breaststroke events, capturing the 50-metre breaststroke, the 100-metre breaststroke, and the 200-metre breaststroke.

The Pronghorns will host the Canada West Swim Championships on Friday, November 25 to Sunday, November 27, 2022.
