Lethbridge Hurricanes split weekend games, return to ice November 9, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Through 17 games in the Western Hockey League (WHL) regular season, the Lethbridge Hurricanes sit in the middle of the pack of the Eastern Conference standings.

Following a loss and a victory this past weekend, the Hurricanes have a record of 8-8-0-1.

On Friday, November 4, 2022, Lethbridge hosted the Vancouver Giants at the ENMAX Centre. It was a tight contest in front of the 3,211 cheering fans, but the visiting Giants came away with a 4-3 win.

Samuel Honzek put Vancouver on the board early, with his ninth goal of the season coming 3:04 into the game. About 10 minutes later at the 13:10 mark, Tyson Laventure scored his second of the year to tie the game. Vancouver would take the lead once again two minutes later, and were up 2-1 at the end of the opening frame.

Logan Wormald of the Hurricanes scored 9:20 into the second period, tying the game at two goals a piece. The back-and-forth continued as Ty Thorpe scored at the 19:56 mark to give Vancouver a 3-2 lead going into the third period.

In the third, Cole Shepard scored at 4:58 to tie the Friday night match-up. The Giants were unable to respond with a goal of their own, sending the game into overtime.

The extra period did not yield a resolution, so fans in attendance were treated to a shootout. Noah Chadwick of the Hurricanes started things off but was stopped by Vancouver goaltender Jesper Vikman.

Samuel Honzek then scored on Harrison Meneghin to give the visiting team the advantage. Cole Shepard got anther chance for Lethbridge but missed his attempt. A goal from Jaden Lipinski sealed the game for the Giants, securing them a 4-3 shootout win.

Vancouver now has a record of 6-7-2-2 and sits in sixth place in the WHL Western Conference.

Cole Shepard of the Hurricanes was named the first star of the game, while Giants goaltender Jesper Vikman was the second star. Lethbridge’s Logan Wormald earned third star of the game honours.

VISITING MEDICINE HAT

The weekend play did not end Friday for the Hurricanes. They visited the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday, November 5, 2022. Over 2,000 packed Co-op Place for the Saturday night match-up.

The Hurricanes were fired up following their Friday night loss. Jett Jones scored his eighth goal of the season 11:20 into the game. No other goals were scored and Lethbridge led 1-0 after the first.

In the second period, Logan Wormald scored his fifth of the year at 6:59, giving Lethbridge the 2-0 lead.

Medicine Hat gained some momentum at the start of the third, with Andrew Basha scoring five seconds into the period. About eight minutes later, Tyson Zimmer scored to put Lethbridge up 3-1.

Dallon Melin scored at the 17:25 mark to cut the Hurricanes’ lead to one, but it was not enough, and Lethbridge left Medicine Hat with a 3-2 win.

Tyson Zimmer was named the first star of the game. Lethbridge teammate Jett Jones was the second star, and goaltender Jared Picklyk was the third star. Picklyk stopped 24 out of 26 shots for Lethbridge.

The Hurricanes return to Lethbridge for a meeting with the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday, November 9.
