Hurricanes beat visiting Broncos 2-1 Saturday night

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes were aiming to earn their third win in a row when the Swift Current Broncos visited the ENMAX Centre Saturday night, November 12, 2022.

The Hurricanes had won their previous match-ups against Medicine Hat (3-2 on Nov. 5) and Prince Albert (2-1 on Nov. 9) and were feeling the momentum going into the weekend tilt.

The momentum was in Lethbridge’s favour and they picked up the 2-1 victory in front of 3,435 fans at the ENMAX Centre.

FIRST PERIOD

The only goal in the opening frame was scored by Caleb Wyrostok. His sixth goal of the season put the Broncos up 1-0 going into the second period.

The referee’s whistle was busy in the first. Just over two minutes into the game, Swift Current’s Adam McNutt and Lethbridge’s Joe Arntsen were issued major penalties for fighting.

Nine minutes into the period, Tyson Laventure of the Hurricanes was sent to the box after earning a minor penalty for tripping. Swift Current’s Braeden Lewis was issued a minor for holding at the 13:39 mark. Laventure was issued a second minor penalty for tripping at the 19:41 mark.

SECOND PERIOD

Just over seven minutes into the second period, Logan Wormald of the Hurricanes received a double minor for slew-footing. His teammate Nolan Bentham was given a minor for interference at 13:47.

17 minutes into the period, Sam McGinley of the Broncons was sent to the penalty box after receiving a minor for high sticking. Lethbridge’s Joe Arntsen received a minor for interference at the 18:16 mark, while teammate Tristan Zandee was given a 10-minute misconduct penalty at 19:35.

The Broncos’ Sam McGinley was issued a minor penalty for holding at the 19:36 mark, and his teammate Caleb Wyrostok was issued a minor for tripping seconds later, at 19:48.

The Hurricanes managed to tie the game up going into the final period. Logan Wormald scored his sixth of the season at the 17:37 mark.

THIRD PERIOD

Lethbridge’s Nolan Bentham scored his fourth goal of the campaign just over 12 minutes into the third period. Bentham’s goal would prove to be the game winner.

Only two penalties were issued in the final frame of the match-up. Caleb Wyrostok of the Broncos was issued a minor for tripping at the 15:49 mark, while his teammate Kayden Sadhra-Kang was given a minor penalty for cross checking at 16:53.

THREE STARS AND UP NEXT

Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin was named the first star of the game. He stopped 31 shots on 32 attempts from Swift Current. Nolan Bentham of the Hurricanes was named the second star of the game, while Swift Current’s netminder Reid Dyck was the third star. He saved 32 shots on 34 attempts.

The Hurricanes continue their home stand later this week. They will host the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centre at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18.

Swift Current returns home for a Tuesday, November 15 match-up against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
