College and university sports recap: November 15, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was not as busy of a weekend as it has been, but both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns had teams in action.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team suffered their first loss of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season over the weekend. The Kodiaks fell 3-2 against The King’s University Eagles on Friday, November 11, 2022. The team turned things around on Saturday, November 12, with a 3-0 victory over the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder. The Kodiaks now have a regular season record of six wins and one loss. They will visit Red Deer Polytechnic on Friday, November 25.

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team had their second loss of the season this weekend. They were defeated 3-2 by The King’s University Eagles on Friday, November 11. The team ended the weekend with a 3-2 victory over the Concordia University of Edmonton on Saturday, November 12. The Kodiaks now have a record of five wins and two losses so far this season. Like the men’s team, they will visit Red Deer Polytechnic on Friday, November 25.

On Friday, November 11, the Kodiaks Esports team matched up against Stockton University in League of Legends. The stream can be viewed at the Kodiaks Esports twitch page.

The Kodiaks cross country team was in Medicine Hat for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) cross country running national championships on Saturday, November 12.

In the women’s team category, the Kodiaks placed 16th overall. In the women’s individual run, Lethbridge College’s Marie Boix-Frias finished 39th overall, finishing the six kilometre course in 26:03. Her teammates Rosie Bouchard and Hannah Smith placed 56th and 77th, respectively. Rayanne Hoeflicher placed 80th overall.

In the men’s team category, the Kodiaks finished in 10th overall. Cooper Williams of the Kodiaks placed 12th overall in the men’s individual. Williams finished the eight kilometre course in 26:40. Teammate Cole Herbert finished in 48th place overall, while Justin Fisher finished 53rd. Jack Bentley landed in the 60th spot, while Chase Chambers finished with a time of 32:44, and Kurt Caballo completed the run in 39:35.

Full results from the Medicine Hat event are available from the CCAA. The outdoor running season has now concluded, so the Kodiaks will now shift their focus to the indoor track season, which will start in January of 2023.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The Pronghorns men’s basketball team lost its two games this weekend. On Friday, November 11, the ‘Horns fell 90-85 in Langley, British Columbia against the Trinity Western University (TUR) Spartans. Jeff Rodehutskors led the U of L with 22 points, while Connor Platz had 24 points for TRU. It was another close game on Saturday, November 12, but the Spartans came away with the 77-72 victory. Kymani Pollard had 24 points for the Pronghorn, and Mason Bourcier led TRU with 30 points. The U of L men’s basketball team now has a Canada West regular season record of one win and three losses.

The U of L women’s basketball team also suffered two losses. They fell 81-77 in Langley against TRU on Friday, November 11. Haily Weaver scored 24 points to lead the Pronghorns, while Jayden Gill had 25 points for the Spartans. TRU earned another win on Saturday, November 12, with the final score being 67-55. Haily Weaver led the U of L once again, with 16 points. Nicole Fransson had 23 points to lead the Spartans in scoring. The U of L women’s basketball team has a regular season record of one win and three losses.

Both the Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams travel to Brandon, Manitoba for games against Brandon University on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19.
