Three local speed skaters impress at competition in Calgary

CALGARY, AB – A trio of Lethbridge speed skaters made the city proud over the weekend.

Three members of the Lethbridge Speed Skating Association participated in the Junior Canadian Short Track Open at the Olympic Oval in Calgary on Saturday, November 12, 2022 and Sunday, November 13.

Zakhary Adelman recorded two personal best times in the 1,500 metre and 1,000 metre races. He finished 19th out of 57 total skaters and in 12th place among Junior B1 skaters.

Adelman’s performance secured his spot as one of five male skaters to represent Alberta in Prince Edward Island in February at the Canada Winter Games.

Denise Wesseling competed in the 14/15 age category. She skated to a 49th place finish, 18th among Junior B1 female skaters in a competitive field. Meanwhile, in the women’s 16-18 age group, Mikka Eaves finished 17th overall and 10th among female Junior B2 skaters. Eaves has qualified for the Canada Winter Games in her age group and will represent Alberta in February.

The long track season continued on Friday, November 18 with the International Can-Am competition at the Olympic Oval, with several Lethbridge skaters competing at the event.
