Lethbridge Hurricanes split weekend games ahead of six-game road trip

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes ended a four-game home stand this weekend with a win and a loss.

On Friday, November 18, 2022, the Hurricanes hosted the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centre.

That was a followed by a match-up on Saturday, November 19 against the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings.

FRIDAY NIGHT

On Friday, November 18, over 3,400 fans packed the ENMAX Centre to see the Hurricanes battle the Red Deer Rebels. Red Deer went on the board first, with Mats Lindgren scoring his second goal of the season two minutes and 40 seconds into the game.

It took over 10 minutes, but Lethbridge responded at the 16:16 mark. Tyson Zimmer scored his third of the year. Zimmer’s power play goal was assisted by Nolan Bentham and Tristan Zandee.

At the end of the first period, the game was tied at one.

Halfway through the second frame, Logan Wormald scored his seventh goal of the season to put the Hurricanes up 2-1. Tyson Zimmer and Hayden Smith earned the assists on Wormald’s goal.

The Red Deer Rebels responded just over a minute into the third period. Jayden Grubbe scored his sixth goal of the year to tie the Friday night match-up at two.

The teams were unable to score for the remainder of regular, so the game was sent to overtime. The extra period yielded no goals, which meant fans were set to see a shootout.

On his first attempt, Kai Uchacz of the Rebels was stopped by Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin. Noah Chadwick scored for the Hurricanes on his first attempt.

Meneghin stopped Red Deer’s second shooter, Talon Brigley. Tyson Zimmer of the Hurricanes missed his attempt against Kyle Kelsey.

Meneghin made the all-important stop on Jace Isley’s shot attempt, securing the 3-2 shootout win for the Hurricanes.

Tyson Zimmer of the Hurricanes was named the first star of the game, while Red Deer netminder Kyle Kelsey was the second star. Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin was the third star of the game.

SATURDAY NIGHT

The Hurricanes welcomed the Edmonton Oil Kings to the ENMAX Centre on Saturday, November 19.

Vojtech Port of the Oil Kings started the scoring 12 minutes into the first period. By the end of the opening frame, Port’s goal was the only goal scored.

Only a minute and a half into the second period, Cole Shepard scored his eighth of the season for Lethbridge to tie the game.

His teammate Tyson Zimmer scored 12 minutes into the second to put the Hurricanes up 2-1.

Edmonton gained more scoring traction in the third period. At the 13:52 mark, Carson Golder tied the game for the visiting team. About six minutes later, Marshall Finnie scored to put the Oil Kings up 3-2 with less than a minute to go in the game. Golder scored his second of the game on an empty net at the 19:57 mark to secure the 4-2 victory for Edmonton.

For the second night in a row, Tyson Zimmer of the Hurricanes was named the first star of the game. His teammate Cole Shepard was the second star, while Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson was named the third star of the game.

UP NEXT

Following this weekend, the Hurricanes now hold a record of 11-9-0-1 and sit in sixth place in the Western Hockey League (WHL) Eastern Conference.

Lethbridge begins a six-game road trip on Tuesday, November 22 in Winnipeg against the ICE.
