LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Mayor’s 2022 Community Hockey Challenge is back for another year.

Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen first introduced the challenge last winter to support local food banks ahead of the holiday season.

In total, the 2021 event raised close to $4,500 in food and monetary donations and they hope to see that number grow in this weekend’s match.

Hyggen says, “As we all know, there are more and more people using those food banks, especially after the pandemic and the cost of rising food.”

On Sunday, November, 27, 2022, Lethbridge city staff will face off against a number of community partners that include several assistant coaches from the Lethbridge Hurricanes and staff from Lethbridge College and Exhibition Park.

Guest coaches include the Deputy Premier, Minister of Infrastructure and MLA of Lethbridge East, Nathan Neudorf, Deputy LPS Chief Gerald Grobmeier, City Councillors Mark Campbell and Jenn Schmidt-Rempel, as well as Rob Miyashiro, Executive Director of the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization.

“This Sunday, starting at 4:00 pm, there will be different performances from the figure skating club that’ll be there as well, some sledge hockey and ringette,” added Hyggen,

“So multiple things are going to be happening and Timbit Hockey, so you’ll get to see little kids play as well. It’s going to be a lot of fun.” he said.

This year, the game will benefit the Interfaith Food Bank and the Lethbridge Food Bank.

Those looking to catch all the action on Sunday are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food or consider offering a financial contribution.

The Mayor’s 2022 Community Hockey Challenge will take place at the ATB Centre’s east/blue arena on November 27 at 4:00 p.m.

Hyggen hinted that there may be other community fundraising games or activities in the new year.
