College and university sports recap: November 28, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a busy weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

The Kodiaks basketball and volleyball teams hit the court, while the Pronghorns basketball teams were in action. The U of L also played host the 2022 Canada West Swimming Championship.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP).

On Friday, November 25, 2022, the women’s basketball team beat RDP 79-67. Courtney Deemter scored 27 points to lead the Kodiaks to victory. On Saturday, November 26, the Kodiaks lost 70-50. Kitawna Sparks was the leading scorer for Lethbridge College, with 21 points. RDP was led by Sandra Garcia-Bernal, who scored 21 points.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team faces the SAIT Trojans on Saturday, December 3. The team now has a record of seven wins and three losses on the 2022-2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season.

The men’s basketball team also played host the RDP. On Friday, November 25, the Kodiaks defeated RDP 91-88. Taylor Barfuss scored 18 points, while Paycen Blackmore added 16 and Brady Baines scored 15 points in the win. On Saturday, November 26, RDP picked up the 75-64 win, handing Lethbridge their first loss of the regular season. Eduardo Crespo led Red Deer with 25 points, while Filip Karanovic was the leading scorer for the Kodiaks, with 16 points.

The Kodiaks men’s basketball team has won nine games and lost one this regular season. The team will host the SAIT Trojans on Saturday, December 3.

The women’s volleyball team suffered two losses on the road against Red Deer Polytechnic. On Friday, November 25, RDP earned the 3-1 win. This was followed by a 3-0 victory on Saturday, November 26. Lethbridge College has five wins and four losses this season, and will host Briercrest College on Friday, December 2.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team has six wins and three losses this season. Like the women’s team, they lost both of their weekend match-ups against RDP. On Friday, November 25, Red Deer earned the 3-0 win. It was a repeat on Saturday, November 26, with another 3-0 win for RDP. The Kodiaks host Briercrest College on Friday, December 2.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

It was a special weekend for the U of L swim team. Pronghorn Athletics hosted the 2022 Canada West Swimming Championship.

Roughly 200 swimmers from across Western Canada attended the event at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre.

Following the competition, Apollo Hess was named the Men’s Swimmer of the Meet, while Pronghorns head coach Peter Schori was named the Men’s Coach of the Year.

Both U of L basketball teams hit the court over the weekend. The teams hosted the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack.

On Friday, November 25, the Pronghorns men’s basketball team beat the Wolfpack 81-69. Kymani Pollard scored 17 points to lead the U of L. Cyrus Harrison led TRU with 20 points. On Saturday, November 26, TRU beat the U of L 78-74. Denys Bachurin scored 22 points to lead the Wolfpack, while Kymani Pollard was once again the leading scorer for Lethbridge, with another 17-point performance.

The Pronghorns men’s basketball team has two wins and six losses for the Canada West regular season. The U of L hosts the University of Calgary (U of C) Dinos on Friday, December 2.

Meanwhile, the Pronghorns women’s basketball team has five wins and three losses on the season. They have won their last four games following two victories this past weekend. On Friday, November 25, they beat TRU 76-39. Jessica Haenni led the U of L with 21 points, while Danijela Kovacevic was the leading scorer for TRU with seven points. On Saturday, November 26, the Pronghorns beat the Wolfpack 79-58. Jessica Haenni once again led the Pronghorns with 21 points. Kelsey Cruz scored seven for TRU.

The Pronghorns women’s basketball team hosts the U of C Dinos on Friday, December 2.
