LETHBRIDGE, AB – Over the weekend, the second annual Mayor’s Community Hockey Challenge took place at the ATB Centre which drew dozens of Lethbridge residents out to support local non-profits.

The hockey match was first introduced by Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen in 2021, as a lighthearted competition against community partners to raise money for the food bank.

Spectators were encouraged to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item or provide a monetary donation to support the Interfaith Food Bank and the Lethbridge Food Bank.

Prior to the game, Hyggen noted, “The reason we chose the food banks like we did last year, is just the incredible need and the clientele that they are actually supporting, especially again these last couple years, the increase has been incredible.”

“Those that have never had to use a food bank are now using it on a regular basis,” he added. “So definitely something so important to support.”

This year, the Mayor’s Community Hockey Challenge saw about 240 pounds of food and gift donations, with another $2,000 made in financial contributions.

In total, they raised approximately $3,000 for the non-profit organizations.

Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge Executive Director, Danielle McIntyre says they are elated to see so many people come together to support those in need.

“It’s inspiring to see our leadership encouraging the Spirit of Giving!” says McIntyre. “We’re grateful to see so many community members coming out in support of our local food banks at a critical time when so many citizens are having to turn to us for help.”

“It is never too late to give, and we encourage participation in community collections, online giving, and upcoming events that will ensure that everyone has a chance to enjoy a Merry Christmas. Most importantly, we hope the generosity will continue so there is enough food on the table for everyone year-round,” she said.

As for the game, on November 27, 2022, both teams came out fast and strong with the first goal being scored against the city within the first four minutes of play.

In the end, the city still came out on top for the second year in a row with an 8-5 win.

Hyggen hinted that there may be other community fundraising games or activities in the new year.
