Holiday Card Drive spreading cheer across Southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – “We like to call ourselves Cheermeisters.” That’s the message from Abigail Cumming, a member of the team behind the Holiday Card Drive.

The initiative aims to spread cheer across Southern Alberta through holiday cards distributed to senior citizens and veterans in the region.

Cumming told LNN, “My best friend Daicya Munton started this three years ago [in 2019], wanting to just spread a little bit of cheer in the care facility that her grandmother was at in Fort Macleod.”

Following the passing of Munton’s grandmother, the program has grown to see cards distributed at facilities in Lethbridge, Coaldale, Milk River, Warner, Raymond, Magrath, Claresholm, Taber, and Picture Butte.

The pandemic and accompanying restrictions further helped to inspire the program.

Cumming said when restrictions took effect and family members were unable to visit their loved ones in care homes, Munton “wanted to make sure that everyone in that care home got a Christmas card that year.”

In 2021, over 3,300 cards were handed out across Southern Alberta. The goal for 2022 is to collect 5,000 cards for distribution.

Cumming said the initiative has received an “overwhelmingly positive” response from the community, with group homes and schools now involved in making cards.

She told LNN, “We’re just so excited to be spreading some cheer and we can’t wait to grow this even bigger next year and meet the demands and needs of everybody.”

Cards can be made at in-person events with the Cheermeisters, including the Domesticated Divas Events Holiday Artisan and Gift Expo in Lethbridge on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4, 2022.

Residents can also make a card at home and drop it off at one of the many Holiday Card Drive drop-off locations in Southern Alberta.

Cards are accepted year-round, but the Holiday Card Drive is asking for most cards to be dropped off by December 16, 2022.
