Natural gas pipeline expansion in Southern Alberta approved

LUNDBRECK, AB – Construction on three new sections of pipeline in the region is set to get underway next year.

The Government of Canada has approved the NOVA Gas Transmission Limited (NGTL) West Path Delivery 2023 pipeline project.

Once complete, a total of 40.1 kilometres of new natural gas pipeline will be built in southwestern Alberta, adding to the 25,000 km NGTL system.

That includes a 23.7 km section just north of Turner Valley, nine kilometres to the southwest of High River, and 7.4 km to the west of Lundbreck.

According to a media release from the federal government, the project is expected to create over 1,160 full-time construction jobs and contribute roughly $180 million to Alberta’s GDP.

The government says projects like this are important as the country explores a variety of options to ensure reliable, long-term access to domestic energy supplies and to reduce carbon emissions.

NGTL hopes to start construction in the third quarter of 2023 and begin service in November 2023.
