CALGARY, AB – It’s no secret that Alberta has some of the most diverse landscapes in the country. Between stunning mountain tops and serene prairies, it’s become a destination hot spot for people across the world.

With over 470 provincial parks and recreation areas, Alberta has welcomed thousands of visitors to experience its lakes, forests and campgrounds.

In the past year, the provincial government estimates that over 10 million people explored provincial parks, engaged in outdoor recreation, and contributed to local economies.

More than 260,000 camping reservations were processed this year, which resulted in more than 642,000 occupied camper nights across the province.

In the past five years, the number of people checking out Alberta provincial parks has increased by more than 33 per cent.

As a result, Alberta Parks hired an additional 450 seasonal staff to support tourism and ensure environmental sustainability after budget 2022 invested nearly $75 million into operating expenses.

Minister of Forestry, Parks and Tourism, Todd Loewen said, “Our provincial parks system benefits every Albertan while attracting visitors from around the world.”

“I am proud to share that we had another successful summer camping and recreation season and we are beginning what will be a busy winter. At the end of the day, parks are for people – for people to explore, appreciate nature, learn and enjoy,” added Loewen.

In addition to increased operating expenses, another $34.4 million was set aside in budget 2022 for improving sites across the province.

That included upgrades like the 14 kilometers of new biking trails in Cypress Hills Provincial Park, upgrades to the Matápiiksi (Hoodoo) Interpretive Trail in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, a new visiting platform at Little Lake in Saskatoon Island Provincial Park, and a new equestrian camping area in both Castle Provincial Park and Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area.

According to the government, Alberta’s provincial parks play a key role in boosting the regional economy along with tourism and hospitality.

Many online provincial camping reservations for next summer open after January 1, 2023.
