Cold weather records set in several Alberta communities Dec. 1 and 2

DRUMHELLER, AB – Environment Canada says the last couple of days have been the coldest on record for numerous communities in Alberta.

The agency explains that a prolonged cold spell over Alberta has led to many broken temperature records.

The lowest recorded temperature in the province this week, not including the wind chill, was in the Hendrickson Creek area in central Alberta on the morning of Thursday, December 1, 2022, when the mercury dipped to -39.7.

The following areas set a daily minimum (overnight low) temperature record on the morning of Thursday, December 1, 2022:

  • Bow Valley (Provincial Park) Area
    • New record of -32.1
    • Old record of -29.0 set in 1980
    • Records have been kept since 1928
  • Breton Area
    • New record of -32.2
    • Old record of -28.0 set in 1990
    • Records have been kept since 1939
  • Camrose Area
    • New record of -31.8
    • Old record of -30.5 set in 1985
    • Records have been kept since 1921
  • Coronation Area
    • New record of -31.0
    • Old record of -30.4 set in 1980
    • Record have been kept since 1912
  • Hendrickson Creek Area

Extreme cold warnings are in effect for several regions in southern and eastern Alberta as of Friday, December 2, 2022. Environment Canada is calling for wind chill values near -40 overnight.
