College and university sports preview: December 2, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local post-secondary teams are in action this weekend.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball and volleyball teams compete, while the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns basketball teams hit the court.

Lethbridge College is also preparing for a special memorial tournament later this month.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks women’s and men’s basketball teams compete this weekend at the University of Calgary against the SAIT Trojans.

The women’s basketball team faces the Trojans at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2022. The men’s basketball team battles SAIT at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3.

The Kodiaks women’s team currently has seven wins and three losses on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season, while the men’s team has nine wins and one loss.

Following this Saturday’s games, the women’s and men’s basketball teams will be off for a few weeks over the holiday season. Both teams will be back in action against SAIT on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

The Kodiaks women’s and men’s volleyball teams are on home court this weekend. Both teams host Briercrest College.

On Friday, December 2 at 6:00 p.m., the women’s team is in action. The men’s team will follow up with an 8:00 p.m. match against Briercrest College.

On Saturday, December 3, the women’s team has a 1:00 p.m. start time against Briercrest. At 3:00 p.m., the men’s team faces Briercrest.

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team has five wins and four losses so far this ACAC regular season, while the men’s volleyball team has six wins and three losses.

After this weekend, the women’s and men’s volleyball teams will rest for a few weeks before returning to the court in the new year against SAIT on Saturday, January 7.

Lethbridge College is gearing up for the 2022 Haylie Shoults Memorial Futsal Tournament on Saturday, December 10. The event is a one-day tournament hosted by the Kodiaks women’s soccer and futsal programs. Funds raised from the event will go towards the Haylie Shoults Memorial Award.

The award is a women’s soccer scholarship created to honour the legacy of the late Haylie Shoults, a former player with Kodiaks Athletics. Shoults passed away following a collision in November 2021.

The 2022 recipient of the Haylie Shoults Memorial Award was Malorie Hanson. More information on the memorial tournament is available from the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

In other Kodiaks news, Kitawna Sparks and Filip Karanovic have been named the Athletes of the Week.

Kitawna Sparks plays for the Kodiaks women’s basketball team. Sparks is averaging just over 18 points per game, 9.1 rebounds per game and has a shooting percentage of 61.8% from the field this season, which leads the ACAC. On Friday, November 25, Sparks had 12 points and 12 rebounds to help the Kodiaks to a 79-67 win over Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP). On Saturday, November 26, Sparks was the team’s leading scorer with 21 points and eight rebounds, in a 70-50 loss against RDP.

Filip Karanovic is playing in his first season with the Kodiaks men’s basketball team. He is averaging 11.6 point per game, 5.1 rebounds per game and 5.0 assists per game. On Friday, November 25, he scored 10 points and had nine assists in a 91-88 win over RDP. In a 75-64 loss to RDP on Saturday, November 26, Karanovic had 16 points, along with four rebounds and two assists.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

It’s a lighter weekend for the U of L Pronghorns, following last weekend’s 2022 Canada West Swimming Championship.

This weekend, both the women’s and men’s basketball teams are on home court in Lethbridge.

At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, the women’s basketball team faces the University of Calgary (U of C) Dinos. It’s a rematch with the Dinos at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3. The Pronghorns have a record of five wins and three losses so far on the Canada West regular season.

Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team matches up against the U of C at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2. A rematch between the teams is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3. The U of L currently has two wins and six losses on the Canada West regular season.

This weekend will be followed by the winter holiday break. The U of L women’s and men’s basketball teams return to the court on Friday, January 6. Both teams will face Mount Royal University in Calgary.
