BROOKS, AB – The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) says it has arrested two people on charges relating to drug trafficking.

Officers conducted a targeted traffic stop in the Brooks area on Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Inside the vehicle, ALERT claims to have confiscated 249 grams of methamphetamine, 29 grams of cocaine, 85 grams of fentanyl, and $4,500 in cash.

The drugs are estimated to have a street value of approximately $35,000.

ALERT began to investigate alleged drug trafficking activities in September 2022, working alongside the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS), Brooks RCMP, and Calgary Police Service.

ALERT Medicine Hat Staff Sgt. Ryan Thorburn alleges that the two suspects were connected to a larger organization.

“This arrest and subsequent seizure has helped to dismantle the drug network between Calgary and Medicine Hat, and also negatively impacting the communities in between. Drug trafficking transcends municipal borders and we will continue to work alongside our partner agencies to keep communities safe,” says Thorburn.

Ashley Gackle, 45, of Medicine Hat, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property under $5,000. He remains in custody and is awaiting a bail hearing.

Amiel Mehaisen, 30, of Calgary, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property under $5,000. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Members of the public who suspect drug or gang activities in their community can contact their local police or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
