Christmas fundraiser launched for mother of five battling terminal cancer

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge woman is looking to raise money for a young family of five who has been hit with a wave of bad news over the past three years.

Maggie Hall is known to kickstart fundraisers in the community for local individuals who are in need, and coming off a successful event in October, she’s back to it again, helping one mother who is battling cancer.

In 2019, Amanda Strange was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through two and a half years of chemotherapy treatments, as well as a double mastectomy.

In February 2022, Strange got word that she had been diagnosed with Terminal Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Strange and her five children then moved from Kelowna, British Columbia back into her mother and step-father’s house in Nobleford, Alberta, while she goes through another round of chemotherapy and brain radiation.

Following the news, Maggie Hall wanted to spread some holiday cheer to Strange’s children, aged 15, 13, 12, 10 and five, by starting a fundraiser for the family.

Hall told LNN, “I was hearing about Amanda through the grandparents, so I asked them if they would mind if I did a fundraiser to give the kids an extra special Christmas this year.”

Hall is collecting gift cards, cash donations, gifts, and hosting a dinner at Honkers Pub and Eatery in Lethbridge on December 23, 2022.

After the fundraising dinner, the family will be presented with whatever has been raised or donated since the fundraiser launched in November.

Hall said, “A gentlemen donated us a tree and we wrapped it with garland and lights and hung ornaments on the tree. People can go into Honkers Pub, take an ornament on there and it’ll say gas card or grocery card, movie pass, hockey skates, we put different things on there that some of the kids had asked for.”

“No donation is too big or too small,” Hall explained.

“It’s just been a lot of stress on the family, and my objective is to try and really alleviate some of that stress off of them during this time because things aren’t looking good.”

Those looking to donate can contact Maggie Hall directly through her email at maggie.h.40@hotmail.com.
