LETHBRIDGE, AB – Make that four wins in a row for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Western Hockey League (WHL) club won its two games over the weekend to extend their win streak to four games. On Friday, December 9, 2022, they defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-3 at the ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge. The Hurricanes followed that win with a 4-3 shoot-out victory in Swift Current against the Broncos on Saturday, December 10.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Friday night marked a special occasion at the ENMAX Centre, as fans brought toques and teddy bears for the 26th annual Canadian Tire Toque & Teddy Toss. Stuffed animals and toques were tossed on to the ice between periods in the initiative aimed at helping local charities over the holidays.

As for the game itself, Medicine Hat got on the board first thanks to Dru Krebs’ third goal of the season at the 12:17 mark.

Lethbridge responded quickly, though. Logan Wormald scored his 10th of the season at the 13:32 mark to tie the game at one.

The second period saw four goals in total. Miguel Marques scored his third of the year at the 6:51 mark to put Lethbridge up 2-1. Marques’ goal was followed by a successful shot by Tyson Zimmer, his ninth of the season, 14 minutes into the frame.

The visiting Tigers would respond just under 20 seconds later. Owen MacNeil scored his fourth of the season to cut Lethbridge’s lead down to one. At the 17:59 mark, Brayden Boehm scored his 11th of the campaign to tie the game at three going into the third and final period.

Just over nine minutes into the final period, Tyson Zimmer scored his second of the game to put Lethbridge up 4-3. Right before the buzzer went off to signal the game’s end, Jett Jones scored on an empty net at 18:57 to seal the deal for Lethbridge, securing them the 5-3 victory.

Hurricanes’ goaltender Harrison Meneghin was named the first star of the game. He saved 38 shots on 41 attempts by the Tigers. Meneghin’s teammate Tyson Zimmer earned second star honours, while Oasiz Wiesblatt of the Tigers was named third star of the game.

SATURDAY NIGHT

On Saturday night, the Hurricanes travelled to Swift Current to face the Broncos.

Just over a minute into the game, Raphael Pelletier scored his ninth of the season to put the Broncos up 1-0. That would be the only goal in the opening period.

Jett Jones scored 29 seconds into the second to tie the game. The goal was Jones’ 14th of the season. At the 11-minute mark, Tyson Laventure scored to put Lethbridge up 2-1 going into the final period.

In the third, Mathew Ward scored at the 3:20 mark to tie the game. His teammate Braeden Lewis scored at 6:13 to give Swift Current the 3-2 lead. The Hurricanes would not be denied a win, however, as Tyson Laventure scored his second of the game at the 18:33 mark to send the game to overtime!

The extra period yielded no winner, so the game was sent to a shoot-out.

Noah Chadwick scored on his first attempt for Lethbridge. Hurricanes’ goaltender Harrison Meneghin was able to stop a shot from Swift Current’s Luke Mistelbacher.

Tyson Zimmer then scored for Lethbridge, giving the visiting team the advantage. Josh Filmon was stopped by Meneghin, securing the win for the Hurricanes.

Tyson Laventure was named the first star of the game, while his Lethbridge teammate Jett Jones earned second star honours. Swift Current’s Raphael Pelletier was named the third star of the game.
