Hurricanes lose two in a row heading into holiday break

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes suffered two losses to visiting teams this weekend.

Lethbridge hosted the Kelowna Rockets on Friday, December 16, 2022 and welcomed the Calgary Hitmen to the ENMAX Centre on Saturday, December 17.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Kelowna started scoring early, with Carson Golder picking up his 12th goal of the season 3:56 into the first period. The second frame of the game was controlled by the Rockets.

Caden Price scored his fifth of the season 14 minutes into the period, followed by a goal by Andrew Cristall at the 17-minute mark.

The Rockets scored at 19:51, with Noah Dorey picking up his first goal of the year.

The host Hurricanes had a big hill to climb as they entered the third and final period down 4-0.

Dylan Wightman added to Kelowna’s tally with his sixth goal of the season at the 9:21 mark.

Just a few moments later, Wightman’s teammate Logan Peskett scored his second of the year at 11:23 to put the Rockets up 6-0.

Lethbridge was unable to mount a comeback and lost the Friday night match-up 6-0.

Carson Golder of the Rockets was named the first star of the game, while teammate Andrew Cristall was the second star of the game. Kelowna goaltender Talyn Boyko was named the third star, with a 35-save shut-out performance for the Rockets.

SATURDAY NIGHT

Saturday was another tough outing for the Hurricanes. The visiting Calgary Hitmen came out firing.

Riley Fiddler-Schultz scored 3:42 into the game, his 18th goal of the season. His teammate Zac Funk scored at 9:33 to give Calgary the 2-0 lead going into the second period.

Just over a minute into the second, Matteo Danis scored his fifth of the year to put the Hitmen up 3-0. Dax Williams then scored at 5:38, his first of the season. Williams’ goal was followed by a successful shot by Maxim Muranov, his second of the year, at 11:12. This put Calgary up 5-0.

Lethbridge responded, however, with Logan Wormald scoring his 12th of the season at 18:10.

At the 6:40 mark of the third period, David Adaszynski scored his sixth of the year to put Calgary up 6-1. Teammate Matteo Danis scored his second of the game at 10:59.

Just under 14 minutes in, Chase Pauls of the Hurricanes scored his third of the season to cut Calgary’s lead to five. It was not enough, though, and the Hitmen left Lethbridge with a 7-2 victory.

Calgary’s Matteo Danis was named the first star of the game, with teammates Zac Funk and Dax Williams named second and third stars.

UP NEXT

The Hurricanes are now off for their holiday break. Lethbridge will be back in action on December 27, when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Going into the break, the Hurricanes sit in fifth place in the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference, with a record of 19-13-0-1.
