LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is reminding residents about what can and cannot go into their waste collection carts.

Officials ask that residents keep the following items out of their black carts:

  • Batteries
  • Propane tanks
  • Compressed gas cylinders
  • Electronics
  • Motor oil

Citizens are asked to dispose of those listed items at the Hazardous Household Waste and Electronic drop-off at the City of Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Centre.

WISH-CYCLING

Officials are advising residents to avoid what is known as wish-cycling, which means tossing questionable items into the blue cart in the hopes that they can be recycled.

Those working at the City of Lethbridge Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) are responsible for sorting the items placed in blue carts, as well as those collected at recycling stations.

Officials ask residents to keep the following items out of their blue cart, in order to protect staff at the MRF:

  • Glass
  • Needles
  • Helium tanks
  • Animal carcasses
  • Ammunition
  • Garbage bags with solid waste
  • Yard waste

Additionally, leftover items from Christmas holidays, like wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and Styrofoam are not accepted in the blue cart and should be placed in black carts.

Residents with questions on what cart certain items should go in can call 311 or use the online waste wizard at the City of Lethbridge website.
