Hurricanes beat visiting Tigers 3-2 Tuesday night

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes came out swinging in their return to the ice following their holiday break. The Western Hockey League (WHL) team hosted the Medicine Hat Tigers at the ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge on Tuesday night, December 27, 2022.

In front of a crowd of over 3,000 people, the home team came away with the 3-2 victory.

FIRST PERIOD

Joe Arntsen put Lethbridge on the board first, with his sixth goal of the season coming 7:15 into the opening period on a power play. Just over two minutes later, at 9:32, his teammate Logan Wormald scored his 13th of the 2022-2023 campaign to put the Hurricanes up 2-0.

Medicine Hat responded minutes later, with Brendan Lee scoring his 19th of the year to cut Lethbridge’s lead to one before the first period ended.

The opening frame saw a number of penalties. These included:

  • A minor on Oasiz Wiesblatt (Medicine Hat) for slashing at the 0:29 mark
  • A minor on Kurtis Smythe (Medicine Hat) for hooking at 6:08
  • A 10-minute misconduct penalty on Tomas Mrsic (Medicine Hat) at 9:32
  • A minor on Dustin Renas (Lethbridge) for spearing at 10:57
  • A minor on Tyler MacKenzie (Medicine Hat) for holding at 12:39
  • A minor on Brayden Edwards (Lethbridge) for slashing at 18:36

SECOND PERIOD

The second period of the Tuesday night match-up only saw one goal. Logan Wormald scored his second of the game, on a power play at the 15:09 mark to put Lethbridge up 3-1.

As for penalties in the period:

  • Miguel Marques (Lethbridge) received a minor for cross checking at 8:10
  • Pavel Bocharov (Medicine Hat) received a minor for slashing at 15:14
  • Andrew Basha (Medicine Hat) received a minor for interference at 15:44
  • Brayden Boehm (Medicine Hat) was issued a minor for roughing at 17:17
  • Jett Jones (Lethbridge) received a minor for roughing at 17:17

THIRD PERIOD

The only goal in the third came late in the period, with Medicine Hat’s Owen MacNeil scoring his fifth of the year. MacNeil’s short-handed goal at the 19:59 mark was not enough to tie the game, and the Hurricanes left the ice with a 3-2 victory.

It was another busy period for penalties:

  • Dustin Renas (Lethbridge) received a minor for checking from behind at 6:18
  • Joe Arntsen (Lethbridge) was given a minor for delay of game at 12:09
  • Rhett Parsons (Medicine Hat) received a minor penalty for cross checking at 16:26
  • Andrew Basha (Medicine Hat) was given a 10-minute misconduct at the 19:44 mark
  • Dallon Melin (Medicine Hat) was issued a minor for interference on goaltender at 19:44
  • Oasiz Wiesblatt (Medicine Hat) was issued a 10-minute misconduct at 19:44

THREE STARS AND UP NEXT

Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin was named the first star of the game. Meneghin stopped 27 shots on 29 attempts by Medicine Hat.

With two goals, Logan Wormald was named the second star, while his Lethbridge teammate Tristan Zandee was the third star of the game.

The Hurricanes end 2022 on the road. They’re back on the ice Friday, December 30 against the Broncos in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
