Bassano Health Centre emergency department to re-open to 24-hour service

BASSANO, AB – After seven months, the Bassano Health Centre emergency department (ED) will reopen to full 24-hour, seven days per week coverage starting in the new year.

Back in June 2022, Alberta Health Services (AHS) had to temporarily limit the Health Centre’s hours due to a lack of physicians.

More recently, AHS says a new doctor has begun working in the community and another is set to begin in March 2023.

According to a release from Alberta Health Services, “AHS continues to recruit for family physicians across southern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities”

It went on, “They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, and the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.”

The health centre in Bassano is set to re-open for full service, effective January 2, 2023.

Residents are reminded they can call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7, for non-emergency health-related questions. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are also encouraged to call their family physician.

AHS thanks the community for their patience and understanding over this period.
