EDMONTON, AB – With many ringing in the new year with resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle, Alberta Blue Cross is highlighting those who did just that in 2022.

Whether that’s promoting a health-related cause, making the most of life while living with a chronic condition, standing up for mental health or being a role model for others, the Faces of Wellness program recognizes those who have embraced the term ‘health and wellness’.

Brian Geislinger, vice-president of Corporate Relations with Alberta Blue Cross said in a news release, “The Faces of Wellness program recognizes Albertans who are everyday champions for wellness in their own lives, workplaces and communities.”

“When we introduced this program in 2021, we were thrilled to receive 140 nominations, so we were amazed to receive over 350 nominations and applications from across the province this year,” he added.

With interest in the program nearly tripling in the past year, Alberta Blue Cross decided to acknowledge 10 finalists alongside their winner.

The grand prize recipient for 2022 was Lauren Kennedy West of Edmonton.

West is a mother of three living with schizophrenia. Alberta Blue Cross said she not only works hard to practice wellness in her own life, but aims to inspire others around the world through her YouTube channel.

As the 2022 winner of the Faces of Wellness program, West was awarded an all-expense-paid weekend wellness experience in Banff.

Other finalists included Sydney Hampshire, a childhood stroke survivor who co-founded an app which helps people with mobility limitations; Tyson Yanchycki, who was diagnosed with cancer at 19 and went on to run across Alberta, raising over $20,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation; and Dr. Marie Holowaychuk, who decided to use her voice to share the lessons she had learned in mindfulness, self-care and mental health with other veterinarians.

“The experiences and journeys of these individuals really reflect the diverse nature of wellness, whether that be striving to live a healthier life, overcoming a health challenge, or inspiring others to take on healthier behaviours through their own actions,” said Geislinger.
