COALDALE, AB – Staff members with the Town of Coaldale have officially started to relocate to the new Civic Square Building.

In July, it was reported that Coaldale’s town hall building was up for sale, as staff prepared to make the move to their new office on the second floor of Civic Square.

The Civic Square Building was constructed in collaboration with Shift Real Estate Investments LP. The build marks the completion of the first phase of a three-phase economic development project that initially broke ground in 2021.

The main floor of Civic Square houses commercial businesses, a new Council Chambers for Coaldale Town Council, and an atrium with a seating capacity of 260. The Town said the atrium can be used for community events and weddings.

Coaldale mayor Jack Van Rijn said, “Once Town staff get set up and all of the audiovisual equipment is installed, Council will also make the move and begin holding its meetings in a brand-new Council Chambers that opens up to a beautiful atrium.”

He added, “I honestly can’t wait for the public to see how great this building turned out, and I look forward to attending the many events that will be held there in the months and years to come.”

The second floor of the building was purchased by the Town of Coaldale for a new municipal office.

Town of Coaldale Chief Administrative Officer, Kalen Hastings said, “A lot went into the planning of this building, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”

Hastings said, “We look at the Civic Square project as much more than just the construction of a new Town Office; at its core it’s an economic development project that, once fully operational, will serve as a gathering place that will attract people and events to Coaldale’s downtown core.”

With the first phase of the Civic Square project now finished, phases two and three can start. The Town said these phases will allow for further development of up to 10,000 square feet of additional commercial space along Main Street.

The next phases will also see the redevelopment of the outdoor space directly behind the Civic Square Building. The Town noted that this space will become a community gathering area and serve as a hub for festivals, markets, outdoor skating and other community events, while providing parking for downtown.

The new Town Office will be fully operations starting January 30, 2023 and is located at 1801 – 20th Avenue in Coaldale.
