Refugee Bus Pass Support Program extended in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has extended the Refugee Bus Pass Support Program through the first two months of 2023.

In the summer of 2022, City Council approved $90,000 from Council Contingencies for Lethbridge Transit, through the Fee Assistance Program, to provide a free six-month bus pass to all new refugees arriving in Lethbridge.

An additional $15,000 from Council Contingencies was approved in September in order to keep the initiative running.

The City of Lethbridge noted that at the end of 2022, there were funds remaining in the program that had not ben used. Those funds have since been approved to keep the program going through January and February, 2023, or until all previously applied funding is used.

Two-month bus passes will be issued in January by Lethbridge Transit, with one-month passes to be issued for eligible applicants in February until the funding runs out.

At the Governance Standing Policy Committee meeting on February 23, 2023, a Transit Support Pass Program policy will be presented for ongoing operations of the initiative.
