FORT MACLEOD, AB – Alberta’s film and television industry says the widely anticipated HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us” shows the province can handle any size of production.

The series, which premieres Sunday, January 15, 2023, was filmed in Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022.

Filming took place across several communities in the province including Calgary, Edmonton, Fort Macleod, High River, Okotoks, Olds, Canmore, and Waterton Lakes National Park.

The province’s film commission says the production is the largest to date in its history and one of the biggest in Canada. The nine-episode show is estimated to cost as much as $10 million per episode.

The series takes place 20 years after a civilization-changing event where a hardened survivor is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl out of a city turned into a quarantine zone.

It stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.

The Last of Us will be released on HBO and HBO Max. Canadian viewers can stream the series through the HBO package on Crave.
