College and university sports recap: January 16, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was another busy weekend for both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

At the tail end of last week, the Kodiaks men’s basketball team faced the SAIT Trojans on Thursday, January 12, 2023. The Kodiaks fell 86-81. Paycen Blackmore led Lethbridge College with 22 points, while Charlie Conner scored 21 points for the Trojans. Up next for the Kodiaks men’s basketball team is a meeting with St. Mary’s University on Friday, January 20. The Kodiaks sit in first place in the South Division of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) with nine wins and three losses.

The women’s basketball team also hosted SAIT on Thursday, January 12. The Kodiaks were defeated 62-58. Kitawna Sparks was the leading scorer for Lethbridge College with 13 points. Brook Baker led SAIT with 20 points. The Kodiaks women’s basketball team faces St. Mary’s University on Friday, January 20. Lethbridge College is in fourth place in the ACAC South Division with seven wins and five losses.

The Kodiaks futsal teams faced Medicine Hat College in a series of games on Sunday, January 15.

The men’s futsal team beat the Rattlers 4-2 and followed that with a 5-2 victory. Meanwhile, the women’s futsal team defeated Medicine Hat College 3-2 and later earned an 8-3 victory.

Both Lethbridge College volleyball teams played twice this weekend.

On Friday, January 13, the men’s volleyball team beat Keyano College 3-0. The Kodiaks followed that up with a 3-1 loss against Lakeland College on Saturday, January 14. The men’s volleyball team has 10 wins and four losses on the regular season, which puts them in first place in the ACAC South Division. The Kodiaks face Ambrose University back-to-back on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28.

The women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 to Keyano College on Friday, January 13 and fell 3-0 to Lakeland College on Saturday, January 14. The Kodiaks are in second place in the ACAC South Division with a record of seven wins and seven losses. The team faces Ambrose University on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the University of Saskatchewan.

The men’s basketball team lost 86-82 on Friday, January 13. Deng Dak led the Pronghorns with 20 points, while Alexander Dewar was the leading scorer for the Huskies with 26 points. On Saturday, January 14, the U of L lost 87-77 to the Huskies. Deng Dak once again led the ‘Horns with 20 points. Tyrese Potoma led the University of Saskatchewan with 21 points.

The Pronghorns men’s basketball team is in 15th place in the Canada West standings with four wins and 10 losses. The team visits the University of Regina on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28.

Meanwhile, the Pronghorns women’s basketball team lost 90-84 against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, January 13. Jessica Haenni had 27 points for the U of L, while Haily Weaver scored 25. Gage Grassick led the way for the Huskies with 20 points. The Huskies beat the Pronghorns 91-74 on Saturday, January 14. Jessica Haenni once again led the U of L with 21 points, and Carly Ahlstrom scored 36 t lead the Huskies to victory.

The U of L women’s basketball team is in 12th place in the Canada West standings with five wins and nine losses. The team visits the University of Regina on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28.
