Lethbridge Hurricanes finish weekend set with two wins, one loss

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a very busy weekend for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Western Hockey League (WHL) club competed in three games.

They welcomed the Prince George Cougars to the ENMAX Centre on Friday, January 13, 2023. On Saturday, January 14, the Red Deer Rebels were in Lethbridge, and on Sunday, January 15, the Hurricanes traveled to Calgary to face the Hitmen.

FRIDAY

On Friday, January 13, the Prince George Cougars brought the fight to Lethbridge, scoring the first goal of the game at the 6:10 mark. Ethan Samson got his 11th goal of the season.

The Hurricanes responded with a goal at 10:42. It was Miguel Marques’ fourth of the season.

The second period saw three goals. Tristan Zandee scored his sixth of the year to put Lethbridge up 2-1. Former Hurricane Chase Wheatcroft scored at 9:39 to tie the game at two goals.

Just over a minute later, at 10:48, Anton Astashevich put the Hurricanes up 3-2 with his fourth goal of the 2022-2023 season.

In the third period, Riley Heidt scored at the 7:18 mark to tie the game at three. Lethbridge was unable to respond and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, Tyson Laventure was the hero for the home team, scoring his 13th goal of the season just 47 seconds into overtime. Lethbridge left the ice with the 4-3 win.

Lethbridge’s Blake Swetlikoff was named the first star of the game, while teammate Anton Astashevich was the second star. Prince George’s Riley Heidt was the game’s third star.

SATURDAY

Saturday, January 14 was a lower-scoring affair than Friday night, as the Hurricanes welcomed the Red Deer Rebels to the ENMAX Centre.

The second period saw the only goals of regulation. Kalan Lind scored his 12th of the season just over two minutes into the frame. About 10 minutes later, Miguel Marques responded with his fifth of the season to tie the game.

No goals were scored in the third, which meant for the second night in a row, the Hurricanes were going to overtime.

In the extra period, Hunter Mayo scored his 14th goal of the year at the 4:55 mark to secure the 2-1 win for the visiting Rebels.

Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin was named the first star of the game, while Red Deer’s Rhett Stoesser earned second star honours. Miguel Marques of the Hurricanes was the third star of the game.

SUNDAY

Lethbridge’s trio of weekend games was capped off Sunday, January 15 with a visit to Calgary to face the Hitmen.

10 minutes into the first period, Cole Shepard scored his 14th of the season to put the Hurricanes up 1-0. Just over a minute later, Shepard scored again to give Lethbridge the 2-0 advantage.

At the 17:10 mark of the second period, Carson Wetsch scored for Calgary. It was his eighth goal of the season. Lethbridge took further control in the third period.

Tyson Laventure scored at the 6:15 mark, his 14th of the season, and teammate Logan Wormald scored his 16th goal of the year at the 17:40 mark.

When all was said and done, the Hurricanes left Calgary with a 4-1 victory.

Bryan Thomson of the Hurricanes was the first star of the game, while teammate Cole Shepard was named the second star. Calgary’s Carson Wetsch was the game’s third star.

UP NEXT

The Hurricanes are now in fifth place in the WHL Eastern Conference, with a record of 24-15-1-2.

Up next for Lethbridge is a trip across the border.

They visit the Everett Silvertips on Wednesday, January 18. On Friday, January 20, they will face the Seattle Thunderbirds and on Saturday, January 21, the Hurricanes visit the Portland Winterhawks before returning home on Friday, January 27 to host Winnipeg.
