No injuries in impaired collision at Coalhurst turnoff

COALHURST, AB – RCMP is continuing to investigate a single-vehicle collision at the main entrance to Coalhurst.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023, Coaldale RCMP was called to the intersection of Highway 3 and 51 Avenue, which is the primary way to get in and out of Coalhurst.

RCMP says the driver of a car, a 30-year-old man, drove across the intersection and wound up in the ditch.

No injuries have been reported.

According to RCMP, the subsequent investigation revealed that the driver is believed to have been intoxicated by alcohol at the time of the collision.

Provincial sanctions for impaired driving, along with violation tickets, were issued.

Coaldale RCMP Staff Sergeant Mike Numan explains to LNN that, because the driver was issued provincial sanctions and not Criminal Code charges, his name cannot be released publicly.

The sanctions entail a 90-day license suspensions. After the suspension period it up, the driver can apply to have an breathalizer interlock installed in his vehicle for one year.

He will also have to pay a $1,000 fine.
