LETHBRIDGE, AB – A student at the Lethbridge College has been chosen to be one of 20 recipients for the Colleges and Institutes Canada Paul and Gerri Charette Bursary Program.

The Bachelor of Nursing Student, Mandy Mabe, found out in December 2022, that she was chosen to accept the $5,000 national bursary.

Students across Canada receiving the award were chosen based on their financial need and who may be facing challenges completing post-secondary education.

Mabe, who is in her second year at the College, noted this scholarship will dramatically improve her financial situation.

“Financial stress, as I work toward my Nursing degree, is significant,” she says. “My wife frequently works overtime shifts and sacrifices time with our family so we can make ends meet. Receiving this scholarship means more time together and more time for me to focus on my studies.”

Throughout her life, Mabe has pushed back in the face of adversity and has worked tirelessly to overcome hardships.

While attempts to attend post-secondary had not worked in her favour in the past, her partner encouraged her to try again and enroll at the Lethbridge College.

“I want to become an ER nurse at Lethbridge’s Chinook Regional Hospital,” she says. “I’m on my way to realizing my dream of helping others.”

Mabe is just one of many students who is facing financial challenges, but continues to power through to achieve their post-secondary and professional goals.

Marko Hilgersom, Registrar at the Lethbridge College said, “This $5,000 award should help alleviate some financial barriers and empower Mandy to continue to excel in her studies and in her future career as a registered nurse.”

“This bursary has the potential to change Mandy’s life, which is exactly what Paul Charette had hoped for when he created the award with his wife, Gerri. Mandy’s story and how she’s using her education to help overcome barriers and challenges is really impactful,” he adds.
