College and university sports preview: January 20, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns compete this weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the court.

The women’s basketball team hosts St. Mary’s University at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023. The teams have a 6:00 p.m. rematch on Saturday, January 21 in Calgary. The Kodiaks have seven wins and five losses on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season, which has them in fourth place in the ACAC South Division standings.

The men’s basketball team has nine wins and three losses so far this season and sit in first place in the ACAC South Division. The Kodiaks host St. Mary’s University at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20. On Saturday, January 21, it’ a rematch at 8:00 p.m. in Calgary.

The Kodiaks indoor track team is in Edmonton on Saturday, January 21 for the ACAC Grand Prix #1 event, hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton. This year’s team is the largest ever fielded in Kodiaks history. Some of the athletes competing include first-year Brock Jensen in the 3,000 metres, and Owen Stewart, another first-year student-athlete competing in the 1,000 metres. On the women’s side, second-year Maria Boix Frias aims to transfer her success from the cross country season to the indoor track.

In other news, Jamie Brown and Mason Hoffman have been named the Kodiaks Athletes of the Week.

Jamie Brown is a fifth-year student-athlete with the women’s volleyball team. Last weekend, with games on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14, the Kodiaks suffered two losses. However, Brown showed confidence with 29 kills, one assist, one ace, 23 digs, and one block. She also earned player of the game honours on Saturday, January 14.

Mason Hoffman is a first-year athlete with the men’s basketball team. The Kodiaks returned to the court following their holiday break on Thursday, January 12. Hoffman scored 14 points, had three rebounds, four assists and four steals in the Kodiaks’ 86-81 loss to the SAIT Trojans. The game was Hoffman’s first start as lead point guard for the team.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

It’s a lighter weekend for the U of L Pronghorns.

The track and field team starts its year off in Edmonton. The team competes at the Golden Bear Open, hosted by the University of Alberta, on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21.
