Lethbridge man charged in connection to aggravated assault downtown

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has charged a local man with aggravated assault after an incident in the downtown core that left one man with significant injuries.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on January 16, 2023, police responded to reports of an injured man along the 700 block of 5 Avenue South.

The 28-year-old victim claimed he was assaulted in the street and was subsequently admitted to the hospital where his condition deteriorated, and he was later admitted to hospital for serious head trauma.

Police were able to locate surveillance footage from earlier in the day that showed a man approach the victim in the area of 7 Street South and 4 Avenue South and strike him with a weapon several times.

The victim and suspect are known to one another and the LPS believe this incident was targeted.

Following further investigation, police were able to locate and arrest 37-year-old Ryan Neale Nepoose, of Lethbridge on January 22, 2023.

Nepoose is charged with one count of aggravated assault, and after a Judicial Interim Release hearing, was remanded in custody.

He is scheduled to appear in court on January 26, 2023.
