Trial delayed for accused in connection to Coutts protest

COUTTS, AB – New trial dates will need for be set for a woman charged in connection to alleged events at the Coutts border blockade.

Joanne Person, of Coutts, appeared in Lethbridge Provincial Court on Monday, January 23, 2023.

She is charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Charges of possession of a weapon and mischief causing property damage were withdrawn at her previous appearance last week.

Person informed the courtroom that she no longer wishes to be represented by Kelsey Sitar and plans to self-represent for the remainder of her matter in court.

She was initially scheduled to have a two-day trial on February 16 and 17, 2023, but those plans are being altered.

The accused said she still needs to receive and review disclosure relating to her file, including videos and witness statements.

Person’s matter was adjourned to February 6, 2023, where it is anticipated that dates for a new pre-trial conference will be set.
