Dozens rally outside of courthouse in support of infant in critical condition

The two are not considered to be co-accused in the matter, but rather, are charged with similar offences.

The lawyers for the accused made a brief court appearance, and the matter has been adjourned to Friday, January 27, 2023, where bail hearings are expected to be held.

The suspects remain in custody and the crown indicated that it is opposed to their release.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) says it arrested the suspects on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, after receiving information that a six-week-old child was allegedly being abused.

LPS says the baby remains in critical condition in the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary and “is receiving the highest level of care and all her needs are currently being met by her caregivers.”

The police service issued a reminder to residents this week that there is a court-imposed publication ban for this case that went into effect as soon as charges were initially sworn in.

According to police, “The ban prohibits publishing the identity of the victim and any information that could lead to her identity, including the names of her accused parents. This ban applies to everyone – law enforcement, media outlets and members of the public.”

In addition to the rally outside of the courthouse on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, another rally was also held on Monday, January 23, along Mayor Magrath Drive South to show support for the young victim.
