Intro to Trades dual credit program launched at Lethbridge College

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College is offering up an exciting opportunity for prospective students.

Two dozen learners from high schools in Southern Alberta will be taking part in the post-secondary’s Introduction to the Trades Dual Credit Pathway Program.

The program is presented in tandem with Career Transitions and local area school divisions. It is a newly-developed, 15-week course that highlights all of the trades programs offered at Lethbridge College.

These include:

• Agricultural Technician
• Automotive Service Technician
• Heavy Equipment Technician
• Parts Technician
• Carpentry
• Baking
• Cooking
• Electrical
• Powerline Technician
• Plumbing
• Welding
• Wind Turbine Technician

As part of the program, students review theory online and then visit the Lethbridge College campus for hands-on training under the direction of Centre for Trades faculty. Students will visit the college eight times this semester.

Sheldon Anderson, Dean of the Centre for Trades stated in a news release, “We are helping students explore as many different trade opportunities as possible in a practical way.”

Anderson continued, “Students will be able to identify a career path earlier in life, which can lead to advancement opportunities in their chosen field earlier than ever before.”

The college said six southern Albertan school districts are taking part in the project’s initial offering, including the Lethbridge School Division, Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, Palliser Regional Schools, Horizon School Division, Livingstone Range School Division, and Westwind School Division.

Each district was allotted four student spaces.

Joelle Reynolds, Associate Dean of Youth Initiatives at the Centre for Trades said, “The course filled up quickly, and we’re looking at expanding capacity in the future.”

Reynolds added, “We are also currently developing additional opportunities for high school students to specialize in trades and gain pre-employment training.”
