College and university sports preview: January 27, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s another weekend of action for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams have an away and home set against Ambrose University this weekend.

The women’s basketball team is in Calgary against Ambrose at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, 2023. That meeting will be followed by a game in Lethbridge at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. The Kodiaks have a record of nine wins and five losses so far in the season. Their record puts them in second place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division standings.

The men’s basketball team is in Calgary for an 8:00 p.m. match-up against Ambrose on Friday, January 27. On Saturday, January 28, the teams will square off at 8:00 p.m. in Lethbridge. The Kodiaks men’s team leads the ACAC South Division with 11 wins and three losses so far this season.

Both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams also compete against Ambrose University.

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team is on home court at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, hosting Ambrose. That is followed by another 6:00 p.m. match-up in Calgary on Saturday, January 28. The Kodiaks are .500 on the season so far, with seven wins and seven losses. That puts them in third place in the ACAC South Division.

The men’s volleyball team hosts Ambrose at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27 before visiting their opponents in Calgary for an 8:00 p.m. rematch on Saturday, January 28. So far this season, the Kodiaks have 10 wins and four losses, placing them in second place in the ACAC South Division.

In other Kodiaks news, Kitawna Sparks of the women’s basketball team has been named one of the Athletes of the Week. In back-to-back wins against St. Mary’s University on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21, Sparks recorded two consecutive double-doubles. In Friday’s 93-69 win, she scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. In Saturday’s 67-59 victory, she scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds. Sparks is averaging 18.4 points per game, second in scoring in the ACAC South Division.

The indoor track team consisting of Gunnarr Gibb, Jack Bentley, Jonah Hennig, and Orin May also earned Athlete of the Week honours. They set a new ACAC record at the Grand Prix #1 event in Edmonton on Saturday, January 21, finishing the 4×200 metre event with a time of 1:37.84.

Meanwhile, Lethbridge athlete Marshall Qually has committed to the Kodiaks men’s volleyball team. The 6-foot-5 player for the Chinook Coyotes will join the Lethbridge College team for the 2023-2024 season. The middle blocker has had success on the court so far in his career, including winning the 2022 Canada Cup competition while representing Team Alberta.

He has also been named a Southern Alberta High School Volleyball League first team all-star and was invited to compete at the GANZA high school volleyball showcase.

Before joining the Kodiaks, Qually plans to compete for a second straight year with the Lethbridge Volleyball Club Junior Kodiaks Under-18 team.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

It’s a busy weekend on the road for both the U of L Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams.

At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, the women’s basketball team competes against the University of Regina Cougars in Regina, Saskatchewan. It’s a rematch with the Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. So far this season, the Pronghorns have five wins and nine losses. Their record puts them in 13th place in the Canada West standings.

The U of L men’s basketball team visits the University of Regina for an 8:00 p.m. match-up against the Cougars on Friday, January 27. The teams will duke it out again at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. The Pronghorns sit in 15th place in the Canada West standings, with four wins and 10 losses.
