College and university sports recap: January 30, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local post-secondary athletes were kept busy this weekend, with both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns having teams in action.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team won its two weekend games to extend its win streak to four. On Friday, January 27, 2023, Paycen Blackmore scored 18 points to lead the Kodiaks to a 84-74 victory over Ambrose University. Isaac Gray led Ambrose in scoring with 25 points. In a rematch in Lethbridge on Saturday, January 28, the Kodiaks earned a 106-68 win. Adyn Card led Lethbridge College in scoring with 18 points, while Isaac Gray once again led Ambrose, recording 15 points. The Kodiaks face Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3. The weekend wins improve the Kodiaks’ record to 13 wins and three losses, placing them first in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team went 1-1 against Ambrose University this weekend. On Friday, January 27, the Kodiaks won 55-44, led in scoring by Courtney Deemter with 16 points. Kamsiyochi Ogbudibe scored 10 points to lead Ambrose University. On Saturday, January 28, a rematch between the teams went to overtime, with Ambrose coming out on top, 58-53. Kitawna Sparks was the leading scorer for Lethbridge College with 19 points, while Nya Gach scored 14 for Ambrose. Up next for the Kodiaks is a meeting with Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3. The Kodiaks have 10 wins and six losses on the season, which puts them in third place in the ACAC South Division.

Both the Kodiaks men’s and women’s volleyball teams faced Ambrose University this weekend.

The men’s volleyball team defeated Ambrose 3-0 on Friday, January 27. That victory was followed by another 3-0 win on Saturday, January 28. The Kodiaks face Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3. The Kodiaks are in second place in the ACAC South Division, with 12 wins and four losses.

Meanwhile, the women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 on Friday, January 27 before claiming the 3-1 victory on Saturday, January 28. Lethbridge College will face Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3. With eight wins and eight losses on the season so far, the Kodiaks are in fourth place in the ACAC South Division.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the court this weekend. Both teams were in Saskatchewan to face the University of Regina Cougars.

On Friday, January 27, the men’s basketball team lost 90-65. Angelo Mbituyimana scored 18 points to lead the Pronghorns, while Brayden Kuski had 21 points for the Cougars. On Saturday, January 28, the U of L lost 74-71. Jeff Rodehutskors led the Pronghorns with 24 points. The Cougars were led in scoring by Brayden Kuski with 16 points. The Pronghorns return home to Lethbridge on Friday, February 3 to host the MacEwan University Griffins. The U of L sits in 16^th place in the Canada West standings, with four wins and 12 losses on the season so far.

The U of L women’s basketball team is in 13^th place in the standings, with five wins and 11 losses. On Friday, January 27, the Pronghorns lost 72-65 to the Cougars. Haily Weaver scored 16 points to lead the Pronghorns, while Jade Belmore scored 17 for the University of Regina. The Cougars earned another win on Saturday, January 28, defeating the U of L 77-72. Haily Weaver once again led the Pronghorns, scoring 30 points and adding 11 rebounds. The Cougars were led again by Jade Belmore, who scored 33 points. Up next for the U of L women’s basketball team is a meeting with MacEwan University in Lethbridge on Friday, February 3.
