College and university sports recap: January 30, 2023
LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local post-secondary athletes were kept busy this weekend, with both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns having teams in action.
LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE
The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team won its two weekend games to extend its win streak to four. On Friday, January 27, 2023, Paycen Blackmore scored 18 points to lead the Kodiaks to a 84-74 victory over Ambrose University. Isaac Gray led Ambrose in scoring with 25 points. In a rematch in Lethbridge on Saturday, January 28, the Kodiaks earned a 106-68 win. Adyn Card led Lethbridge College in scoring with 18 points, while Isaac Gray once again led Ambrose, recording 15 points. The Kodiaks face Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3. The weekend wins improve the Kodiaks’ record to 13 wins and three losses, placing them first in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division.
The Kodiaks women’s basketball team went 1-1 against Ambrose University this weekend. On Friday, January 27, the Kodiaks won 55-44, led in scoring by Courtney Deemter with 16 points. Kamsiyochi Ogbudibe scored 10 points to lead Ambrose University. On Saturday, January 28, a rematch between the teams went to overtime, with Ambrose coming out on top, 58-53. Kitawna Sparks was the leading scorer for Lethbridge College with 19 points, while Nya Gach scored 14 for Ambrose. Up next for the Kodiaks is a meeting with Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3. The Kodiaks have 10 wins and six losses on the season, which puts them in third place in the ACAC South Division.
