College and university sports preview: February 3, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s another weekend of competition for both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s and men’s basketball teams take to the court this weekend.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team has an away and home set against Medicine Hat College (MHC). On Friday, February 3, 2023, they visit the Rattlers at 6:00 p.m. and will then host at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. February 4. The Kodiaks are in third place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division, with 10 wins and six losses.

The Lethbridge College men’s basketball team visit Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 3 at 8:00 p.m., followed by a rematch in Lethbridge at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4. The Kodiaks are lead the ACAC South Division with 13 wins and three losses.

The Kodiaks women’s futsal team faces Northwestern Polytechnic at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, and takes on Olds College at 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening. On Sunday, February 5, the Kodiaks face Northwestern Polytechnic at 11:45 a.m. before a 2:15 p.m. match against Olds College to close out their weekend of exhibition matches.

The Kodiaks men’s futsal team faces Olds College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 4. They will then face Northwestern Polytechnic at 6:30 Saturday evening. On Sunday, February 5, the Kodiaks have a 10:30 a.m. rematch against Northwestern Polytechnic and at 5:00 p.m., they will take on Old College to wrap up the weekend of exhibition play.

The women’s volleyball team hosts Medicine Hat College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3 and visits the Rattlers at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4. The Kodiaks are in fourth place in the ACAC South Division with eight wins and eight losses so far this season.

The men’s volleyball team also competes against the Rattlers this weekend. At 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3, they will host MHC. That will be followed with a rematch in Medicine Hat at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4.

The Kodiaks esports team started the Eastern College Athletic Conference season on Tuesday, January 31. A stream of their first competition can be viewed at the Kodiaks twitch page.

In other Kodiaks news, Mack Lewicki and Declan Peterson have been named the Athletes of the Week. Mack Lewicki is a fifth-year student-athlete and member of the women’s volleyball team. For the weekend of Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29, Lewicki had 14 kills, eight assists, 15 digs and one block across two games – a loss and a win against Ambrose University. Lewicki was also named the player of the game on Friday, January 27. Meanwhile, Declan Peterson is a first-year who suits up for the men’s basketball team. On Friday, January 27, the rookie scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Kodiaks earn an 84-74 win against Ambrose University. On Saturday, January 28, he was named player of the game in a 106-68 win against Ambrose. He scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and added one assist and two steals in the victory.

The Kodiaks have also named Kitawna Sparks and Mason Hoffman as the Athletes of the Month. In her rookie season, Kitawna Sparks leads the ACAC with a 61.8 field goal percentage and is second in points per game, averaging 18.1. Sparks was named a Kodiaks Athlete of the Week and an ACAC Player of the Week in the month of January. Mason Hoffman earned a Kodiaks Athlete of the Week honour in January, and made his first start as the team’s point guard against the SAIT Trojans. The rookie has a 43.2 three-pointer shooting percentage on the season so far.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L women’s basketball team hosts MacEwan University at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3. That game is followed by a rematch at 5:00 p.m. in Lethbridge on Saturday, February 4. The Pronghorns sit in 13th place in the Canada West standings, with five wins and 11 losses.

Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team hosts MacEwan University at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3. On Saturday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m., it will be a rematch in Lethbridge. The Pronghorns are currently in 16th place in the Canada West standings, with four wins and 12 losses so far this season.

The Pronghorns track and field team is in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Athletes will compete at the Bison Classic, hosted by the University of Manitoba, from Friday, February 3 to Saturday, February 4.

The U of L swim team has an exciting weekend ahead. The team hosts the Pronghorn Classic. The event is on from Friday, February 3 to Sunday, February 5.

In other U of L Pronghorns news, Knud Petersen and Ashley Patzer are being inducted into the Pronghorn Athletics Hall of Fame.

Patzer suited up for the U of L rugby program from 2005 to 2009. She went on to play rugby nationally and won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games with the Canadian women’s 7’s team.

Petersen meanwhile, has been a staple in fundraising activities for Pronghorn Athletics. Some of his accomplishments with the post-secondary athletic program include organizing the first Pronghorn Dinner and Auction and volunteering with the Operation Red Nose program.

Knud Petersen and Ashley Patzer will be celebrated on Friday, February 3 and will be inducted at half-time of the men’s basketball game.
