Lethbridge wrestlers earn 15 medals at 2023 Alberta Open

SHERWOOD PARK, AB – Lethbridge-based wrestlers earned medals at a competition in Sherwood Park.

Members of the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA) took part in the 2023 Alberta Open on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5, 2023. Athletes from Lethbridge brought home 15 medals in total between the Tyke (5-year-olds), Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Junior (University athletes up to 20-years-old) categories.

  • Jasper Kornelson (Novice 34 kg) – Gold
  • Reid Skelton (Bantam 38 kg) – Bronze
  • Kade Linford (Bantam 53 kg) – Silver
  • Sydney Shields (Bantam 73 kg) – Gold
  • Thomas Ellis-Toddington (U19 65 kg) – 4th
  • Ryder Lowry (U19 92 kg) – Gold
  • Nolan Gobeil (U19 125 kg) – Silver
  • Tamyrn Bly (U19 49 kg) – 4th
  • Reese Ferguson (U19 57 kg) – Bronze
  • Payton Shields (U19 61 kg) – Gold
  • Grady Steed (U17 51 kg) – 4th
  • Kade Lindford (U17 55 kg) – 6th
  • Thomas Ellis-Toddington (U17 65 kg) – Bronze

Shawn Daye-Finley, program coordinator with LAWA said, “Lethbridge is becoming a recognized force for wrestling in Alberta.”

Head coach Pat Selk added, “It was awesome to see our athletes perform at this level of competition. It’s normally intimidating for a high school kid to get on the mat with a university athlete, but our team was ready and showed it.”

The event included the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association (AAWA) awards banquet. Selk received the School Coach of the Year award, while Daye-Finley received the Outstanding Contributor of the Year award. Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI) was recognized as School Team of the Year at the banquet.
