Coaching Association of Canada aims to address mental health in sports

LETHBRIDGE. AB – On December 13, 2022, the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) announced the launch of its National Mental Health and Sport project. The project will be funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and will launch on February 16, 2023.

The project will have three key objectives. The first is to update and expand some existing mental health training modules, and to improve accessibility to these modules by adapting them into seven different languages.

The second objective is to create an accessible national resource hub to offer training modules, videos and information on mental health.

The third objective is to strategically promote the content to different audiences across Canada.

David McGuinty, Member of Parliament, Ottawa South says COVID-19 has had a major impact on young people’s mental health, and physical activity is important to help create a healthy environment for young athletes.

“Supporting the mental health of athletes is key to creating a healthy environment and a love of sport and physical activity that can last a lifetime,” says McGuinty. “The additional support the Coaching Association of Canada can provide coaches and sport organizations will help foster this positive environment and support ongoing physical activity, while addressing health inequities and supporting young people from equity-seeking groups.”

While this project offers benefits to all coaches who participate, it will focus on support for coaches and other sports leaders in communities identified as the most affected by the pandemic.
