Man arrested near Fort Macleod in connection to excessive speed, prohibited firearm

FORT MACLEOD, AB – A B.C. man faces 16 charges after being apprehended by RCMP near Fort Macleod.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2023, members of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 2 when they say they observed a vehicle travelling at excessive speeds.

A 2003 Black Volkswagen Golf with B.C. plates was reportedly driving at a speed of 178 kilometres per hour in a 100 km/hr speed zone.

A traffic stop was conducted. The RCMP says a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, and break and enter tools were seized from the vehicle.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was arrested.

Jacob Douglas Mayne, 22, of Sparwood, B.C., is charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from police
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition in a motor vehicle
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition with a license
  • Three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Two counts of possession of break-in instruments
  • Driving while uninsured
  • Operating a motor vehicle without registration
  • Operating a motor vehicle without a license
  • Operation of a motor vehicle contrary to conditions

Mayne was released from custody on bail and is scheduled to appear in Fort Macleod Provincial Court on March 8, 2023.
