College and university sports recap: February 14, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was another busy weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns as the post-season approaches.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks men’s basketball team clinched first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division this weekend, thanks to a big win over the University of Alberta-Augustana. On Friday, February 10, 2023, the Kodiaks played their last regular season home game and defeated the Vikings 83-65. Filip Karanovic led Lethbridge College with 23 points. Ryan Degner and Nic Harder each scored 22 points for the Vikings. The win secured a playoff spot for the Kodiaks, who have 16 wins and three losses on the regular season. They face Keyano College on Friday, February 17 and close out the regular season against Lakeland College on Saturday, February 18.

The women’s basketball team has already secured a playoff spot and will host the conference championship tournament. On Friday, February 10, the Kodiaks beat the visiting University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings 78-64. Tylee Leavitt scored 20 points to lead the home team. Mackenzie Mrazik and Jenessa Doctor were the leading scorers for the Vikings with 16 points. The Kodiaks have 13 wins and six losses on the regular season, placing them in third in the ACAC South Division. They will visit Keyano College and Friday, February 17 and Lakeland College on Saturday, February 18.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team had already secured its spot in the ACAC playoffs going into their last game of the regular season. On Friday, February 10, the Kodiaks visited the University of Alberta-Augustana and earned the 3-0 win. The Kodiaks finish the regular season with 15 wins and four losses, and have clinched second place in the ACAC South Division. This has earned them an automatic bye to the ACAC Championships. The team has a week off before playing at the championships in Fort McMurray, starting on February 23.

The women’s volleyball team ended the regular season with a 3-0 loss to the University of Alberta-Augustana. The loss did not impact the Kodiaks in the standings and the team finished in third place in the ACAC South Division with 10 wins and nine losses. On Friday, February 17 at 6:00 p.m., the Kodiaks will host Medicine Hat College in a play-in game. The winner will advance to the ACAC Championships in Red Deer starting February 23.

The Kodiaks indoor track team competed at the Pandas Open in Edmonton February 10-12. Gunnarr Gibb broke the 300-metre record, which was previously set in 2015 by Alex Andres. Additionally, Gibb helped improve the current Kodiaks and ACAC 4×200-metre record time. Cooper Williams broke the 1,000-metre record, set three weeks ago by Owen Stewart, and the 1,500-metre event record, set by Alex Harding in 2015.

In other Kodiaks news, Courtney Deemter and Filip Karanovic have been named the Athletes of the Week. Both student-athletes compete for the Kodiaks basketball teams.

On Friday, February 10, Courtney Deemter was named the ACAC player of the game after scoring 17 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists in the Kodiaks’ 78-64 win over the University of Alberta-Augustana.

Meanwhile, Filip Karanovic scored 23 points, dished out seven assists and had three steals and two rebounds in an 83-65 win against the University of Alberta-Augustana on Friday, February 10. He was named ACAC player of the game for his efforts.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L men’s basketball team closed out the Canada West regular season with a pair of losses against the University of Alberta (U of A) Golden Bears. On Friday, February 10, the U of A won 96-64. Tag Layton, Angelo Mbituyimana, and Kymani Pollard all scored 15 points for the U of L. Lars Ishimwe was the leading scorer for the host team, with 22 points. On Saturday, February 11, the Pronghorns fell to the Golden Bears 107-71. Jack-Henry Fox-Grey led the Pronghorns with 20 points, while Abdullah Shittu scored 27 for the U of A. With six wins and 14 losses, the U of L did not qualify for the playoffs and finished the regular season in 13th place in the Canada West standings.

The Pronghorns women’s basketball team lost 76-50 against the U of A Pandas on Friday, February 10. Piper Dobbelsteyn led the U of L with 12 points, while Claire Signatovich was the leading scorer for the Pandas with 21 points. On Saturday, February 11, the Pandas took the 91-78 victory. Jessica Haenni scored 19 to lead the Pronghorns in points, and Emma Kary scored 28 to lead the U of A. The Pronghorns did not qualify for the playoffs and finished the Canada West regular season in 13th place, with seven wins and 13 losses.

The U of L rugby 7s team was in Victoria, British Columbia for a weekend tournament hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes. The team placed fourth overall and posted a record of 1-3-1. They beat the U of A Pandas, tied with the Trinity Western Spartans and dropped decisions to the University of Victoria, University of British Columbia, and University of Calgary.

The U of L track and field team had a successful weekend competing at the Pandas Open, hosted by the U of A in Edmonton. Jinaye Shomachuk and Andreas Troschke remained undefeated in the women’s and men’s weight throw events. Both currently lead the Canada West and U SPORTS standings. In women’s shot put, all Pronghorns throwers set personal best records. Jinaye Shomachuk led the field while Lauryn Morris finished third. In the men’s triple jump event, Lauchlan Irish captured gold with a new personal best. Irish is in second in the Canada West standings, and fifth in the U SPORTS rankings. In the sprinting events, Maya Cawley and Tommy Awoderu ran for personal bests and finished just outside of earning a spot on the podium. Cawley aided the women’s 4×200-metre relay team to a second-place finish. Awoderu and the men’s team finished fourth in the 4×200-metre relay race.
