MEDICINE HAT, AB – You will run into a fair share of Olivias, Emmas, Sophias, Noahs, Liams and Jacks for the next couple of decades in Alberta.

You may also run into a Bear in the heart of the city, Mars on Earth’s soil, and meet Summer in the middle of winter, and vice versa.

The Government Alberta released details on Thursday, February 16, 2023, of the names chosen for babies born in the province in 2022. Olivia was the most popular name for baby girls for the tenth straight year, with 192 babies who share than name. Noah was chosen 229 times, making it the most popular name for baby boys for the fourth straight year.

Some parents sought more unique names for their bundle of joy. Four Alberta babies were named Joy last year.

Babies were named after animals such as Bear (11) and Fox (five); planets Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and Venus (one each); and the seasons August (44), Spring (one), Summer (27) and Winter (11).

Places like Alaska (two), Hamilton (15), Montana (three) and Scotland (one) had babies named after them; Alberta got no name love. Love was chosen for three babies.

Sports and pop culture figures present and past were popular inspirations for names, too. Connor (49), Cobain (one), Jovi (five), Maverick (97) and Presley (15) all made the list.

Four babies were named Individual.
