CALGARY, AB – Two Lethbridge speed skaters are on their way to Prince Edward Island to compete in the Canada Winter Games starting Saturday, February 18, 2023.

A total of three local speed skaters from the Lethbridge Speed Skating Club had strong results at the Western Elite Circuit (WEC) short track speed skating competition at the Olympic Oval in Calgary on February 11 and 12, 2023.

The Calgary event is comprised of skaters from around the globe. Speed skaters compete in heats and finals for four distances on a 111-metre track, as well as 500 metres, 777 metres, 1,000 metres and 1,500 metres. The results of the event are combined with the results from an earlier WEC competition in October 2022 to determine the podium finishers.

The three Lethbridge speed skaters who competed in the event were Denise Wesseling, Mikka Eaves, and Zakhary Adelman.

Wesseling had a time of 1:27.96 in the 777-metre event, which was a personal best.

Eaves came in second in the 1,000-metre race and third in the 500m, 777m, and 1,500-metre events. This performance earned Eaves a bronze medal for the circuit, and the opportunity to represent Alberta at the Canada Winter Games.

Adelman finished second in the 500m and 1,500m events, with a personal best time of 0:45.31 in the 500-metre event. His consistent performance earned him a bronze medal for the Western Elite Circuit, and he will also represent Alberta at the Canada Winter Games.

Eaves and Adelman will now head to Prince Edward Island to compete in the 2023 Canada Winter Games, which run from February 18 to March 5, 2023.
