College and university sports recap: February 21, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local post-secondary athletes were in action this past weekend. The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s volleyball team in particular, had a big game.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

It was a significant game for the Kodiaks women’s volleyball team on Friday, February 17, 2023. The team hosted Medicine Hat College in a play-in game, with the winner advancing to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) playoffs. The Kodiaks swept the Rattlers 3-0 to secure their spot in the ACAC women’s volleyball championships, which begin on Thursday, February 23. Red Deer Polytechnic hosts the event. Lethbridge College will face The King’s University at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team finished the regular season in second place in the ACAC South Division with 15 wins and four losses. The ACAC men’s volleyball championships take place in Fort McMurray and start on Thursday, February 23. The Kodiaks will face NAIT in their first game at the tournament at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23.

Both the Lethbridge College men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out their ACAC regular seasons this past weekend.

On Friday, February 17, the men’s basketball team lost 82-75 against the Keyano College Huskies. Christopher Schlauwitz was the leading scorer for Lethbridge College with 10 points, while Sean-Michael Clancey scored 40 points for the host Keyano College. On Saturday, February 18, the Kodiaks matched up against Lakeland College and lost 83-72. Paycen Blackmore scored 19 points to lead the Kodiaks, and Johnny Mims scored 25 for the Rustlers. The Kodiaks finished the regular season with 16 wins and five losses, landing them in first place of the ACAC South Division. The team will compete at the ACAC men’s basketball championships in Calgary starting Thursday, March 2.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team earned a win and suffered a loss this weekend. On Friday, February 17, the team beat Keyano College 49-45. Courtney Deemter led the Kodiaks in scoring with 16 points while Maja Besic scored 15 for the Huskies. On Saturday, February 18, the Kodiaks lost 69-45 against Lakeland College. Kitawna Sparks led the way for the Kodiaks with 12 points, while Susan Ayaa recorded 17 points for the Rustlers. The Kodiaks finished the regular season with 14 wins and seven losses, securing them third place in the ACAC South Division. Lethbridge College is set to host the ACAC women’s basketball championships, beginning Thursday, March 2.

The Kodiaks indoor track team was in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre for the Running Room Grand Prix #2 on Saturday, February 18. In the men’s long-distance event, Cooper Williams, representing Lethbridge College, finished first with a time of 8:48.50. Brock Jensen finished in a tie for fourth place with Red Deer Polytechnic’s Daniel Szucs in the men’s 1,000 metre event. The 4-by-200 metre men’s relay race saw the Kodiaks finish in first place. Lethbridge College was able to beat out their previous ACAC record of 1:37.84 with a time of 1:37.20. In the women’s 600-metre event, Maria Boix-Frias of the Kodiaks finished in third with a time of 1:48.70. Jonah Hennig of the Kodiaks finished in third on the men’s side with a time of 1:28.40. The Lethbridge College men’s side finished in third in the men’s 4-by-400 metre event. The weekend event marked the conclusion of the Running Room Grand Prix series. The next event for indoor track athletes is the ACAC championships, which are set to take place Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. The championships will be co-hosted by Concordia University, Northwestern Polytechnic, The Kings University, and the University of Alberta-Augustana. The event will take place at the University of Alberta Pavilion.

This week, the Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams begin their regular seasons. At 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, the women’s futsal team hosts Medicine Hat College. The men’s futsal team will compete at home at 7:00 p.m. against Medicine Hat College on Tuesday, February 21.

In other Kodiaks news, Shane Fowlie and Brock Jensen have been named the Athletes of the Week.

Shane Fowlie plays for the women’s volleyball team. In a 3-0 victory over Medicine Hat College on Friday, February 17 – which secured the Kodiaks a berth at the ACAC championships, Fowlie had eight kills and four service aces. She also recorded a hitting percentage of .467 and was named the ACAC player of the match.

Brock Jensen is member of the Kodiaks indoor track team. At the Running Room Grand Prix #2 in Red Deer on Saturday, February 18, Jensen finished in a tie for fourth place in the men’s 1,000 metre event, with a time of 2:39.30. Jensen overcame injury to secure that finish after being sidelined from training for the last three weeks.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L Pronghorns had the weekend off, but athletes are prepping for upcoming events.

The Pronghorn Athletics swim team competes at the U SPORTS swimming championships. The event takes place in Victoria, British Columbia Friday, February 24 and lasting through to Sunday, February 26.

The U of L track and field team will be in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the Canada West Championships from Friday, February 24 to Saturday, February 25. The U SPORTS championships take place in Saskatoon from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11.
