Winter Storm Warning issued for many communities in southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Many communities in southern Alberta are under a Winter Storm Warning.

The advisory comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada. Snowfall occurred in Lethbridge on Monday, February 20, 2023. Snow continued to fall overnight and into the morning of Tuesday, February 21. Environment Canada said the snow is expected to continue falling throughout the day, with about 15 to 30 centimetres of snow expected by Tuesday evening.

The agency is advising motorists of poor visibility on local roads and highways due to blowing snow. However, conditions are anticipated to gradually improve by Tuesday evening.

Until then, Environment Canada is advising citizens to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Drivers are asked to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions and if visibility is reduced while driving, motorists are advised to turn on their lights and maintain a safe following distance with other vehicles.

The Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the following regions in southern Alberta:

  • Lethbridge-Taber-Milk River
  • Cardston-Fort Macleod-Magrath
  • Crowsnest Pass-Pincher Creek-Waterton Lakes National Park
  • Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost
  • Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield

Other areas of the province are under an Extreme Cold Warning, with some others, including Claresholm, under a Snowfall Warning. More details are available from Environment Canada.
