College and university sports preview: February 23, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It is a busy weekend for local student-athletes, and some members of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks earned some awards for their athletic endeavors.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s volleyball teams begin competition in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championships on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

The men’s volleyball team competes at the tournament in Fort McMurray. The Kodiaks’ first game will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23 against NAIT. Lethbridge College finished in second place in the ACAC South Division with 15 wins and four losses.

Meanwhile, the women’s volleyball team competes at the Red Deer Polytechnic-hosted event. The Kodiaks will face The King’s University at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23. The Kodiaks earned their spot in the tournament by defeating Medicine Hat College 3-0 in a play-in game on Friday, February 17.

The women’s and men’s futsal teams compete at the ACAC south division regionals at Medicine Hat College this weekend.

The women’s futsal team faces Olds College at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, February 24. At 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, the Kodiaks will play Ambrose University. That game will be followed by a 3:30 p.m. meeting with Prairie College. Their weekend will wrap up at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 26 against SAIT.

The men’s futsal team faces Olds College at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, February 24. At 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, it’s a meeting with Ambrose University. The Kodiaks will play Prairie College at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 25 and end their weekend against SAIT at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 26.

The Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams have the weekend off but are gearing up for their respective ACAC championship tournaments, which begin on Thursday, March 2. Lethbridge College will host the women’s tournament, while the men’s championships take place in Calgary.

The Lethbridge College indoor track team is training for the ACAC championships. The event takes place Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. The championships are co-hosted by Concordia University, Northwestern Polytechnic, The Kings University, and the University of Alberta-Augustana, and take place at the University of Alberta Pavilion.

In other Kodiaks news, Gavin Moes of the men’s volleyball team has been named the ACAC South Division rookie of the year. The ACAC has also named the all-conference volleyball teams for the 2022-2023 season. Nolan Moes of the men’s volleyball team was named to the South Division all-conference team as an outside hitter. His teammate Adam Revet made the team. Revet is a middle blocker.

Jamie Brown of the women’s volleyball team was named to the South Division all-conference volleyball team. The outside hitter was also named the ACAC South Division player of the year.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The University of Lethbridge (U of L) swim team competes at the U SPORTS Championships, beginning Thursday, February 23. The event is in Victoria, British Columbia until Saturday, February 25.

The indoor track team is in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 for the Canada West Championships. The U SPORTS Championships take place Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11 in Saskatoon.

The next event for the Pronghorn Athletics women’s rugby 7s team is at the University of British Columbia on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5.

In other Pronghorn Athletics news, Thiago Bastos has been named the new head coach of the U of L women’s soccer team. Bastos is a former assistant coach with the University of Winnipeg, where he also served as the Wesmen’s head futsal coach. Bastos comes to Lethbridge with six years of coaching experience in Canada and is originally from Brazil.
