LETHBRIDGE, AB – The 2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball Championship is set to tip-off at Lethbridge College.

The host Kodiaks will be competing against seven other teams for a chance to bring home the ACAC title and a spot at nationals. The tournament is on from Thursday, March 2 to Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Manager of Kodiaks Athletics and Recreation Services, Todd Caughlin said in a news release, “It’s an incredible opportunity for the college to be able to host an event of this magnitude to not only highlight the sport of women’s basketball in our community, but also the college itself.”

Caughlin added that the event is sponsored by Fox Drilling. He stated, “The goal in hosting a championship is to provide the best possible student-athlete and fan experience, and this only happens when you have a sponsor like Fox Drilling commit to it.”

The Kodiaks finished the regular season in third place in the ACAC South Division, with 14 wins and seven losses. The team’s first game of the tournament will be against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2.

Head coach Ken McMurray said, “We’ve got a young squad and the learning curve is steep, but as coaches, we are so happy with the progress the team has made. Our defense has been great as of late, with deflections and steals that have led to several open court fast break opportunities, and when combined with our strong bench play, the Kodiaks will be a tough out. We’re also excited to host and have the home crowd as our ‘sixth man’ advantage.”

Several former members of the Kodiaks women’s basketball program will return to campus to cheer on Lethbridge College student-athletes, at the invitation of Dawn Keith. Keith is a Exercise Science instructor at the college and served as the head coach of the women’s basketball team from 1994 to 1999.

Fans can purchase a tournament pass for $40, an adult day pass for $15, and admission is free for students and children under 12. Additionally, University of Lethbridge students who show a valid current school ID can purchase tickets for $2. All tickets are available at the door. More information on the tournament is available at the 2023 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship website.
