College and university sports preview: March 2, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s a big weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, while the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns women’s rugby 7s team travels to British Columbia.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball teams compete at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championships. The event is on from Thursday, March 2 to Saturday, March 4, 2023.

The women’s basketball team hosts the tournament in Lethbridge. The team’s first game is at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2 against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. The Kodiaks finished the regular season with 14 wins and seven losses, which landed them in third place in the ACAC South Division standings.

The Kodiaks men’s basketball team competes at the tournament in Calgary, with the event hosted by Ambrose University. Lethbridge College’s first game is Thursday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m. against Northwestern Polytechnic. The Kodiaks won 16 games and lost five during the regular season, which put them in first place in the ACAC South Division standings.

Both the men’s and women’s futsal teams have qualified for the ACAC championships. The tournament will be hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray from Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 12.

The Kodiaks men’s and women’s indoor track teams will compete at the ACAC championships from Saturday, March 18 to Sunday, March 19.

In other Kodiaks Athletics news, Mack Lewicki and Kyeler Paxman-Viani have been named the Athletes of the Week.

Mack Lewicki recorded 16 kills, 16 digs and two service aces in the women’s volleyball team’s semi-final game against the University of Alberta-Augustana at the ACAC championships on Friday, February 24. This earned her ACAC player of the game honours. Lewicki was also named to the all-tournament team.

Kyeler Paxman-Viani scored a hat trick for the men’s futsal team against medicine Hat College on Friday, February 24 as they opened the south division regionals. He finished the weekend off with two goals in a 4-4 tie against SAIT on Sunday, February 26, which helped cement a spot for the Kodiaks at the upcoming ACAC championships.

Meanwhile, multiple members of the Kodiaks basketball teams have received ACAC season awards ahead of the start of the ACAC championships. Kitawna Sparks of the women’s basketball team has been named to the South Division All-Conference First Team. Sparks was also named the South Division Rookie of the Year. Filip Karanovic and Paycen Blackmore of the Kodiaks men’s basketball team were both named to the South Division All-Conference Second Team. Ryan Heggie, head coach of the men’s basketball team, has been named the South Division Coach of the Year.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L Pronghorns women’s rugby 7s team travels to British Columbia. The team will compete at Thunderbird Stadium at the University of British Columbia for the final stop of the Canada West Rugby 7s series. The event is on from Saturday, March 4 to Sunday, March 5.

Members of the U of L indoor track team are preparing for the U SPORTS championships. The event is from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
